The role of supervisor and student for completing a thesis

Master’s degree students are required to write a thesis as a course alternative to a written examination of a paper. The purpose of this article is to understand and discuss the students’ perception on their own roles as a thesis candidate and the role of a supervisor in accomplishing a work of master’s thesis. For this, the candidates of master’s thesis were asked to respond a multiple choice item like questionnaire consisting of 12 sets of statements on the student-supervisor roles or responsibilities in three major aspects of thesis writing, namely topic/area of study, contact/involvement and the thesis/dissertation. The responses were analyzed descriptively using the software package – SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). Analysis showed that the average students wanted to build a bridge (plan and manage the thesis writing) together with the supervisor so that they could cross it (accomplish the work of thesis writing). The students expected joint role of a supervisor. The supervisor and the student are recommended to share their expectations from each other, and build a mutual understanding of supervisor-student roles in advance and do accordingly for the successful completion of the thesis in reasonable time.

Total management: A case of Tribhuvan university

Total management refers to managing all elements/components and resources of the organization through analyzing the environmental situations and carrying out SWOT analysis so that the system of smooth operation can be ensured to accomplish the organizational goals. This article has analyzed the problems of T.U. under three components (i.e. teachers, staffs and students) with reference to the allocated resources (i.e. human, financial, physical and informational). Three major problems were identified separately through factor analysis which covers more than 80% of the problems related to each component and resources. The study shows that there are three major causes of all the problems in T.U. They are: Firstly, the appointment of executives, teachers and staffs is not done on the basis of senerioty and quality and placement of right kind of manpower are not made on the basis of the requirement of the job to be performed in efficient and effective manner. The second major cause is lack of commitment of employees towards their job (i.e. lack of dedication, devotion, determination and discipline). Enhancing writing ability of students through multiple drafts and critical comments

This is an exploratory study through which the researcher conducted the research based on survey research design to find out the existing practices of providing feedbacks and perceptions of faculties in developing writing through multiple drafts and critical comments at B.Ed. level. Fifty respondents were selected from constituent and affiliated colleges as informants adopting purposive non-random sampling procedure to collect data. Questionnaire and informal interview were administered as tools to elicit the data for this study. It was found that the practice of brainstorming, planning, writing multiple drafts, revising and editing can enhance writing skills. The writing of multiple drafts facilitates the students to use mechanics and orthography adequately and develop cohesive and coherent writing. Moreover, it was found that students need teachers’ written as well as oral comments and feedbacks in developing writing skills; teachers’ critical written feedback and comments are more effective than oral feedback and most of the learners rarely keep on writing multiple drafts in the most of the colleges at the Tribhuvan University.

Teachers’ engagement in bringing out the best in students

Teaching English is one of the complex and demanding matters because the teachers have to deal with the students of diverse nature, various circumstances and expectations. Like in other professions, teaching cannot be performed within the specified time. It needs much more time to be engaged in for the pre-planning, classroom delivery and post delivery reflections. In this article, the engagement of an English teacher of secondary level to bring out the best in students has been discussed in terms of his planning preparation, delivery, reflection as well as evaluation, training and collaboration with the administration and other colleagues. Perception of students and teachers towards Tribhuvan University examinations

Tribhuvan University (TU), the oldest university in the country, was founded in 1959. It administered the first examinations in 1961. Since then it has come a long way and it has been conducting several examinations under both semester and annual systems. Nevertheless the standards of the examinations have raised questions among the stakeholders. Therefore, this article makes an attempt to find out what students and teachers have to say about the examinations conducted by TU. For this, a questionnaire based on the Likert Scale was used. The tool consisted of altogether 39 statements grouped under ten different constructs related to the standards of TU examinations. The tool was administered to 40 students and 10 teachers selected based on nonrandom sampling from the two campuses of TU located in Kathmandu. On the analysis of the responses, it was found that both students and teachers felt that there were shortcomings in TU examinations and that improvement were required in line with the internationally practiced standards of examinations.

A meta-analysis of researches on implementing the semester system: The way ahead

At present, Tribhuvan University (TU) seems to be in a sort of dilemma as to whether or not the semester system can be implemented in the programmes run by its faculties. Although TU authorities are still in extended discourse with the concerned stakeholders for the expansion of the semester programme, I sense some dilemma in the steps to be taken, the confusion propped by the fact that even the Master’s programmes under the semester system have not been extended horizontally to the campuses other than the Central Departments at Kirtipur and the two other campuses in the valley only in science education. In this context, this article attempts to synthesize the research findings akin to the semester system and, based on the researches reviewed, points out the possible hurdles that need to be taken into consideration in advance and handled with great caution. The article argues that, despite some socioeconomic challenges, the semester system is better than the annual one and that it is the responsibility of all stakeholders to contribute to the implementation and success of the semester programmes.

Consequences of educational decentralization in Nepal

This study appraises consequences of educational decentralization process (EDP). This Study has Applied qualitative research approach in which information was collected from purposively selected participants belong to 50 primary and secondary schools of 12 districts. This study reveals that in the course of ensuring quality education to all, Nepalese education system implemented EDP. School management committee (SMC) was a sole authority while implementing 'market system' of educational management. Government of Nepal (GoN) had been practicing and delegated authority of school-teacher management to the SMC. Fundamentalism of politics while re-forming SMCs, low academic qualification, lack of managerial skill or capacity of the members had been regarded as some of the mounting challenges. Further, local people including parents were less aware and less capable of assisting SMCs. The policy of handing over SMC had led to increased interest in and ownership of schools by the community in one hand. On the other hand, the education for all (EFA) documents did not focus on empowering the local communities and SMCs for better management of schools in the local level. The large scale program like the Basic and Primary Education Program (BPEP) had in the past concentrated more on capacity building at the central level. No doubt, EDP had been suffering from covertly tight fiscal management policies. Head teachers did not have the rights and responsibility even for recruitment and professional development of the teachers. Poor institutional capabilities, over politicization, nepotism, favoritism had been increasing teacher absenteeism and over-under staffing.

Teacher training in Nepal: Issues and challenges

The quote highlights the role of teachers and it is generally accepted that teachers are the key actors who contribute to the making of people through education. Teachers are often considered as ‘good people’ and in the context of Nepal especially in the rural areas; it is the teacher who is often consulted for any important work in the community. “The teachers are in the business of making good people, or of enabling their students to become good people. They do this specifically by helping them to become smarter” (Tate, 2007: 1). Thus, preparation of teaching force is, therefore, a key concern of the government throughout the world. It is the teacher who lays the foundation of all the professionals when they attend the elementary and secondary school (Farris and Rieman, 2014). Nepal government too has invested a huge amount of resources in teacher training thinking that training would result effective pedagogic skills among teachers and they could then use those skills in their classrooms so that students will have better achievement. However, while reviewing the available literature on teacher training in Nepal, it shows that very little has been achieved in this area in the last few decades. This article is an attempt to review the impact of teacher training in Nepal and identify the major issues in them so as to find out the ways of improving the teacher training in Nepal.

Historical compensation: The eye of the beholders

This article presents the subalterns' perspectives on government’s scholarship program in Badbhanjyang-1, Basundol, and Kathmandu. The information was analyzed and discussed using Spivak's (1988) subaltern theory to understand Dalit as special ability group and Bourdieu's cultural capital (1986) to know their different cultural assets at least in the field of education. This study showed that scholarship program was useful to educate and encourage the Dalit children to enroll in school. However, parents had to cover the additional expenses like exam fees, stationeries, and reference books. This additional financial burden to the parents had forced them to send their children for labor work rather than sending them to school. According to them, the scholarship program has not addressed the caste based social hierarchies rather it enforced them to feel themselves as inferior being ‘Dalit’ because it was given on the basis of the caste, as historical compensation to educate them.
