Editorial: Learning, teaching and disseminating knowledge in business process management

Process-oriented thinking has become the major paradigm for managing companies and other organizations. The push for better processes has been even more intense due to rapidly evolving client needs, borderless global markets and innovations swiftly penetrating the market. Thus, education is decisive for successfully introducing and implementing Business Process Management (BPM) initiatives. However, BPM education has been an area of challenge. This special issue aims to provide current research on various aspects of BPM education. It is an initial effort for consolidating better practices, experiences and pedagogical outcomes founded with empirical evidence to contribute towards the three pillars of education: learning, teaching, and disseminating knowledge in BPM.

Construction and empirical analysis of the indicators of college students’ basic information ability for employability

This study investigated the basic information ability required of college students to be employable in the information technology-centered industrial environment. The researcher interviewed department heads at the National Hsinchu University of Education as well as computer cram school instructors and human resource managers to identify the information abilities expected of students. These preliminary indicators were then revised into a five-major information ability dimension 58-item “Indicators of college students’ basic information ability for employability” by administering the three-round Delphi method survey to 17 managers in the public and private sector as well as industry experts throughout Taiwan. These indicators were then provided to college students from 17 colleges associated with regional information centers in Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Miaoli for self-assessment. A total of 2, 379 effective questionnaires were collected. The “Indicators of college students’ basic information ability for employability” can be used by relevant universities to help students improve information related abilities.

The impact of employee’s perception of organizational climate on their technology acceptance toward e-learning in South Korea

To better understand the relationship between e-learning integration and organizational factors in South Korea, this study explored the influence of employees’ perceptions of organizational climate on their technology acceptances toward e-learning in the workplace of South Korea. Employees’ perceptions of organizational climate was evaluated using Litwin & Stringer’s Organizational Climate Questionnaire (LSOCQ) and employees’ technology acceptance toward e-learning was measured by the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). A canonical correlation suggested that employees’ perceived organizational climate can influence their acceptance levels toward e-learning, which implies the importance of addressing organizational issues while integrating e-learning into workplaces in South Korea.

Effect of student engagement on multimedia-assisted instruction

This study applied multimedia in a general engineering and technology course in Taiwan and evaluated the effectiveness of multimediaassisted instruction and learning. The course presented trends in technological development and the achievements of Taiwanese industries and research institutes from a historical perspective, and overviewed the technology industries and industrial transformation development in Taiwan. The course units adopted multimedia to support class teaching and student learning, and a survey was conducted to collect students’ attitudes and perception toward multimedia-assisted instruction and learning in the course. Research data were collected from 45 male and 9 female students with varied academic and cultural backgrounds. Results showed that multimedia videos help raise students’ awareness of learning issues, improve their understanding of content, and increase the depth of their learning. Almost all students liked the approach of using multimedia to assist teaching and learning, preferring this approach over traditional lecture-based instruction.

Twittering to increase student engagement in the university classroom

In this paper, we explored the research question: Does Twitter in a large-lecture format university course produced a difference in levels of selfreported student engagement? To do so, we utilize a quasi-experimental design testing the effect of Twitter on student engagement in introductory sociology and anthropology courses. Our hypotheses predicted that students using Twitter would report higher levels of five forms of student engagement (academic, intellectual, peer, and beyond-class engagement, along with an overall engagement variable). While peer-reviewed literature and others’ anecdotal reporting would lead us to expect a positive result, we found no significant difference in any form of engagement when Twitter was part of the course than when it was not. In fact, we found that students enrolled in the control (nonTwitter) condition perceived significantly higher levels of academic engagement then those in the experimental (used Twitter) condition. We also included a second set of hypothesis predicting that students who reported enjoying using Twitter would perceive of themselves as more engaged than those who did not enjoy Twitter. These hypotheses were supported across all forms of engagement. We report these findings and utilize comments from an open-ended questionnaire to explore potential reasons accounting for these differences and how students perceived Twitter as a classroom tool.

Challenges of implementing e-learning in a Pakistani university

The integration of e-learning programs into the educational system has reshaped the process of acquisition and dissemination of knowledge throughout the society. Although numbers of researchers approve of the effectiveness of e-learning integration in terms of the innovation it offers to engage with students does not guarantee the success of e-learning programs. This can be observed in developing countries like Pakistan, which have not yet been able to benefit fully from the advantages of e-learning. Though the importance of this issue is theoretically highlighted in research, empirical evidence is scarce particularly regarding developing countries like Pakistan.

Utilizing eLearning to strengthen the capacity of global health practitioners and institutions around the world

This paper presents eLearning as a solution for strengthening human resources for health as well as organizational capacity of regional and local nongovernmental organizations in developing countries. Building the knowledge base and increasing opportunities for continuous learning are crucial ways to strengthen the workforce and health systems in developing countries. In this paper, the authors describe the success of the Global Health eLearning (GHeL) Center and share findings from its multi-phased evaluation. As a result of this successful experience, the Knowledge for Health (K4Health) Project, based at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Center for Communication Programs (JHU∙CCP), implemented three unique country level eLearning programs that seek to improve the knowledge and skills of targeted local audiences as well as build the organizational capacity of the incountry partner organizations in delivering effective eLearning programs. The authors describe the unique applications of each, a variety of ways employed to overcome issues of access, and their lessons learned.

Impact of clicker technology in a Mathematics course

This article reports on the implementation of clickers to improve the success rate of first-year mathematics students. There were 105 students registered in this course, in a university of technology in South Africa. In order to do this, an orientation test in the form of a paper-based assessment was first conducted to determine what students already knew. About 21.9% of the students did not take the test and 20% did not pass it. These results raised concerned. Thereafter students were taught. After four weeks they were evaluated on their understanding of the concept taught in class. Results did not improve much, as 48.6% of the students did not pass the test. Therefore, a technology-engagement teaching strategy (TETS) using clicker technology was developed and implemented in order to improve the pass rate. Weekly continuous assessments or diagnostic tests were conducted in order to establish the changes in students’ academic performance. A survey questionnaire was administered after the teaching and learning of incorporating clickers. This questionnaire also examined students’ perspective on the usefulness of clickers in teaching and learning. The results showed that the effective implementation of clickers with the integration of a TETS improved students’ success rate.

Learning and teaching as communicative actions: Improving historical knowledge and cognition through Second Life avatar role play

The course was designed to help students gain an overall understanding of the causes, trajectory, and aftermath of the Cuban Revolution. Assignments included readings and discussions of historical essays and primary sources that were intended to prompt students to think critically about political, cultural, and scholarly debates surrounding the revolution but also inquiry and role play. In particular, students were encouraged to set aside pre-existing opinions in favor of or opposed to the revolutionary regime of Fidel Castro and U.S. Cold War diplomatic policy toward Cuba.
