HAZARDS OF HOSPITALIZATION OF THE ELDERLY

We have mainly regarded elderly people’s use of information technology in their daily lives as ICT training of elderly people. We have also discussed the possibilities and limitations that technology raises for information, activity and for better contact with others. The use of ICT in nursing and care of elderly people mainly implies in this connection the use of smart-home technology in houses for old people and people with dementia. This technology involves the use of integrated ICT components. Examples of such smart-home technology/caring technology are among other things photoelectric cells (sensors) that can automatically detect dangerous situations such as...

A Study of Elderly Living in Old Age Home and Within Family Set-up in Jammu

Legal and ethical questions of control, supervision and consent in connection with such smart-home technology have in this connection played an important role for us. According to Eldres IT-forum (an IT-forum for the elderly) “elderly people” are those above 55 years, and they represent one fourth of the Norwegian population. The elderly are a heterogeneous group with very different needs and qualifications. Their economic capability, degree of education, their health and degree of functional ability greatly vary. In any case this concerns a large and important part of the population. ...

Health, Life Expectancy, and Health Care Spending among the Elderly

Smart-home technology may give the nursing personnel security in that they will be warned when dangers occur in other parts of the house. The result is that the nursing personnel can concentrate entirely on one person at a time. More time may in this way be spent on human care, instead of control routines. Altered routines lead to less stress and less exhaustion for nurses. This will in the long run have a positive effect on the occupiers. Elderly people often have objections to ICT. Ignorance is often a decisive reason. Information and knowledge about ICT will be important in...

Healthy aging Improving and Extending Quality of life among older americans

Sidsel Bjørneby from Human Factor Solution said in her lecture at the consensus conference that many libraries all over the country (in addition to their traditional tasks) also give courses to elderly people on the use of PC and internet. In addition to this, things function in such a way that elderly people at the library offer user support to other elderly people. There are also a number of other educational institutions running ICT education, but few of them run courses geared directly towards elderly people. Besides, much of the training is relatively expensive, something which may involve differences between...

Influenza vaccination and hospitalisation in Elderly Health Centres

At the consensus conference Torleif Løvgren from Kongsberg presented his experiences from IT training for senior citizens at Kongsberg - in this report referred to as the Kongsberg model. The model is to a large extent based on voluntary work, idealism and extensive cooperation between different voluntary organisations and municipal bodies. According to this model training of elderly IT users is financed partly by the compulsory state school system where this activity is offered as an optional subject, the Red Cross offers rooms and computer equipment in a training centre such as “Open workshop”, the council for the elderly...

ICT for elderly people: Final report from the consensus conference of The Norwegian Boar of Technology

The point of departure of the commitment to this topic area on the part of The Norwegian Board of Technology is an increasing portion of elderly people in the population, development of new communication, security and information technology, comprehensive municipal construction of health care housing and shortage of health care personnel. The consensus conference dealt with both elderly people’s use of ICT as a means of communication and the use of ICT in housing for the elderly (smart-home technology). The main topic, which the lay-people worked on, is whether information and communication technology (ICT) may cause elderly people to become...

Barriers to Health Care among the Elderly in Japan

In November 1999, the Department of Dental Surgery at Chubu National Hospital, National Institute of Longevity Science (Now: National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontologyʣ, established the first oral care outpatient clinic in the nation. We have instructed many people in methods of systematic oral care, and the service has earned a good reputation. In addition to providing tooth-brushing instruction for the healthy elderly, we have also developed an oral care procedure (oral care system) using an electric toothbrush for the dependent elderly who have difficulty maintaining oral health by themselves. This project was funded by a 2000-2002 grant in aid for...

Implications of Edentulism on Quality of Life among Elderly

The system we developed is quick, reliable, safe, inexpensive, effective, easy, and cleans the entire mouth. Furthermore, for people who require a higher level of care, such as those who cannot communicate well, dislike oral care provided by a caregiver, or have difficulty gargling so that this oral care system cannot easily be used, we have developed an oral care support instrument for the convenient and appropriate provision of oral care. These procedures are now being applied clinically with the aim of improving the QOL of both dependent elderly and their care providers. ...

IMMUNE RESPONSE TO INFLUENZA VACCINATION IN A LARGE HEALTHY ELDERLY POPULATION

In 1999, our department was the first in the nation to establish a clinic dedicated to oral care for the elderly and other people requiring care. In that time we have developed an oral care system to provide effective oral care for the elderly and other people requiring care, which is easy on both them and their families, and an oral care support instrument for elderly requiring a high level of care. Using these methods and instruments, we have attempted to raise the QOL of both the dependent elderly and their caregivers, and improve the general health condition...

Differences in 4-Year Health Outcomes for Elderly and Poor, Chronically III Patients Treated in HMO and Fee-for-Service Systems

Height and weight of the subjects were measured using standard procedures. The weight was measured using SECA balance with minimum of cloths to the nearest of 100 gms and height was measured using an anthropometric rod to the minimum of 0.5 cm. Body mass index (BMI : weight in kg/height in meters2 ) was calculated from heights and weights. A value ≤ 18.5 is considered as a cut-off point for chronic energy deficiency (CED) or undernutrition (thinness), while BMI ≥ 25 is considered as overweight or obese. Prevalence of diseases in both groups separately was calculated. Logistic regression [exp (b)] analysis was performed controlling the effect of other potential risk factors to detect the...

The Health Problems of the Elderly Living in Institutions and Homes in Zimbabwe

Cigarette smokers were 2.7 times more likely to have respiratory diseases than those of non-smokers. Similarly consumption of alcohol and use of non-smoked tobacco were found to be risk factors of hypertension. BMI more than 25 was risk factor for hypertension and diabetes. On the other hand risk of respiratory diseases and cataract increased below a BMI of 18.5. Risk for musculoskeletal problems was found to be higher in both extremes of physical status. The higher risk of diseases to the both extremes of BMI suggests a U- shaped relationship of diseases with BMI. BMI less 18.5 was also found to be a significant predictor of ADL- IADL disability among geriatric individuals. 38.9%...

Registered nurses’ health in community elderly careinSweden

While the prevalence of malnutrition in the free-living elderly population is relatively low, the risk of malnutrition increases dramatically in the institutionalized and hospitalized elderly. 1 The prevalence of malnutrition is even higher in cognitively impaired elderly individuals and is associated with cognitive decline. 2 Patients who are malnourished when admitted to the hospital tend to have longer hospital stays, experience more complications, and have greater risks of morbidity and mortality than those whose nutritional state is normal. 3 By identifying elderly persons who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition either in the hospital or community setting, the MNA® allows clinicians to...

Self-Perception of Health among Elderly Community Dwellers in Singapore

Data were included from individuals participating in a prospective study of 2,126 Medicare recipients, 65 years and older, residing in a single community in Northern Man- hattan. Each person received the same medical, neurological and neuropsychological evaluations at regular intervals. The cohort was followed over a 7-year period beginning in 1992. Three follow-up examinations took place at 20-month in- tervals after the baseline interview. Over the study period, the annual mortality rate has been 8.1%, the overall refusal rate has been 10% and the annual incidence rate of AD has been 3% [63]. In order to address the study hypothesis, we included data only from 563 individuals without dementia (AD or other forms),...

HIGHLIGHTS OF PRESCRIBING INFORMATION

In empirical studies of retirement decisions of the elderly, health is often found to have a large, if not dominant, effect. Depending on which health measures are used, these estimated effects may be biased estimates of the causal effect of health on the dependent variable(s).Research indicates that subjective, self-assessed health measures may be affected by endogenous reporting behaviour and even if an objective health measure is used, it is not likely ...

Age- and sex-related effects on the neuroanatomy of healthy elderly

Moreover, one's labour market status may be expected to have a (reverse) causal effect on current and future health. In this paper we analyse the relative importance of these endogeneity and measurement issues in the context of a model of early retirement decisions. We state assumptions under which we can use relatively simple methods to assess the relative importance of state dependent reporting errors in individual responses to health questions. The estimation results indicate that among respondents...

Health and Work of the Elderly: Subjective Health Measures, Reporting Errors and the Endogenous Relationship between Health and Work

Though there may be some controversy about the relative importance of financial incentives in explaining trends in retirement in the U.S., the larger part of the European studies appear to more conclusive 1 . Most European studies point at strong incentive effects from Social Security and Early Retirement schemes. This may be due to the strong disincentive effects that characterise most of these European systems....

Oral health and mortality risk in the institutionalised elderly

The Netherlands may be an extreme case, both in terms of observed retirement patterns as well as in terms of the characteristics of the institutional setting. Since the mid-seventies Labour force participation rates of elderly males (55 years and older) have dropped about 50% points to a current level of less 30%. Employer provided Early Retirement (ER) schemes allow for retirement at the age of 60, or sometimes even earlier 2 . In addition to these schemes there are Unemployment Insurance schemes (UB) and Disibality Insurance schemes (DI) to protect...

Memory performance in healthy elderly without Alzheimer’s disease: effects of time and apolipoprotein-E

The Netherlands may be an extreme case in this respect, but strong incentive effects have also been found for other countries. With respect to Disability application behaviour in other countries like the United States, Germany and Sweden, it has been argued that labour supply (and labour demand) considerations may have taken place in the decision to apply for benefits. To quote Bound and Burkhauser (1999): “the prevalence of disability transfer recipients per worker has increased at all working ages over the last quarter of the century...
