Ever since the first edition appeared in 1963, the book has consistently maintained
a unique appeal both for students (graduate and undergraduate) and practitioners
because of its clarity and commonsense presentation. Straddling the educational
and professional markets, the book requires little if any background in finance and
accounting and provides an accessible, self-contained overview of the essential
financial management concepts and tools.

Scientific writing is dynamic. For proof, you only have to compare a modern-day article with
one written, say, in the 1960s. Of course, some things such as the need for precision, clarity
and brevity seem to be immutable, but many others, like the use of the passive voice or the
first person—I or we—have changed remarkably in a relatively short time.

English as their native tongue are compelled to write
their work in English which, by chance, happens to be the de facto, universal language of
science. As a result, it compelled me to address many of the aspects of scientific writing from
the viewpoint of non-native English speaking authors and to emphasise that they are not as
disadvantaged as they perhaps may think. The language of science which conveys logic and
reasoning, is independent of the language in which it happens to be expressed.

English Grammar 50: 50 - Part 1 Many scientists believe that the dinosaurs were wiped out by a
colossal meteor. According to this theory, a meteor ten kilometers
wide hurtled into the Earth. This collision propelled dust and
dirt into the sky. Imagine a really cloudy summer day. It’s a lot
cooler, right? Well, every day was like that for a long time after
the collision.
Because it was much darker and cooler, many species of plants
began to die. Soon, there was no food source for plant-eating
dinosaurs, and when they died, there was no food source for
meat-eating dinosaurs. The only animals to survive were small
ones able...

English Grammar 50: 50 - Part 2 Body language includes the gestures
and movements people make when they communicate. I can’t
stress enough how important this is. All too often, people just
don’t pay attention to their body language. If we go back to
our earlier scenario of giving a talk for a moment, you might
think you are communicating a clear message when you speak,
but if your body is sending a different message, well, then your
audience is just not going to react as you had hoped. You think
you are a competent speaker, but if they see you slouching, not
making eye contact, or pulling your...

This textbook is organised to provide you with what has been found to be the most appropriate
sequencing of topics as you build the foundations of your accounting knowledge. You will find
that a number of features of the book, properly used, will enhance your understanding and
extend your ability to cope with what will possibly appear, at first, to be a mystifying array of
rules and procedures.

Grammar is a very old field of study. Did you know that the
sentence was first divided into subject and verb by Plato,
the famed philosopher from ancient Greece? That was
about 2,400 years ago! Ever since then, students all over
the world have found it worthwhile to study the structure
of words and sentences. Why? Because skill in speaking
and writing is the hallmark of all educated people.

This book examines the most recent advances in theory and research on
communicative grammar instruction and the various instructional options for
implementing it effectively in second language (L2) classrooms. A consideration
of L2 teaching over the past few decades reveals a fundamental shift in
the teaching of grammar from one in which grammar instruction was central,
to one in which grammar instruction was absent, and to the recent reconsideration
of the significance of the role of grammar instruction....

This exercise looks at some common “American” words (words which are used in the U.S.A. and
Canada). You might find it useful if you have been learning “British” English (the English which is
spoken in the United Kingdom and in other countries around the world). Generally, “American”
words are understood by “British” English speakers (largely as a result of imported television
programs and movies), but many North Americans are unfamiliar with some “British” English words.

No doubt a third General Editor’s Preface to New Accents seems
hard to justify. What is there left to say? Twenty-five years ago, the
series began with a very clear purpose. Its major concern was the
newly perplexed world of academic literary studies, where hectic
monsters called ‘Theory’, ‘Linguistics’ and ‘Politics’ ranged.

It takes a long time to get to work. The traffic in Norwich is terrible! I hate traffic jams because
you have to drive so slowly. Driving to work is so boring! When I get to work I hang up my
coat on the usual hook and go into the staff canteen to make a cup of tea. I usually see my
friends Rodney and Penelope in there and we chat about the weather. Rodney is a Customer
Services Assistant and Penelope is one of our managers.

A singular noun is a word that names one person, place, thing, or idea: brother, classroom,
piglet, and joy. A plural noun names more than one person, place, thing, or idea: brothers,
classrooms, piglets, and joys. A collective noun names a group. When the collective noun refers to the group as a whole, it is
singular. When it refers to the individual group members, the collective noun is plural.
The class meets two days a week. (singular).

The Adelaide Declaration on National Goals for Schooling in the Twenty-first Century identified learning languages other than English as one of the eight key learning areas to be included in a balanced curriculum (MCCETYA 1999). Since then, learning other languages has experienced fluctuating fortunes in the curricula of various Australian states and territories; its struggle for acceptance as a legitimate area in its own right is ongoing.

What Is Simplified English? Simplified English (SE) was developed so that documents written in English could be
understood by people who speak little English. To make the documents easier to understand, Simplified English
uses a limited vocabulary and a set of writing rules. The writer can only use words on the approved list and
technical terms (words common to tile field). Each word on the list has only one approved definition. For
example, “about” is used for “concerned with.” It cannot be used for “around” or “approximately.” Verb tenses
are also restricted. The rules listed below were developed for the AECMA....

This Style Guide is intended primarily for English-language authors and translators,
both in-house and freelance, working for the European Commission. But now that so
many texts in and around the EU institutions are drafted in English by native and nonnative
speakers alike, its rules, reminders and handy references aim to serve a wider
readership as well.

Many students in China have a weak-instrumental motivation for studying
English. They just want to pass the CET-4 so they can get their bachelor’s
degree. Others have a strong-instrumental motivation. They study because
they want to acquire a good job or study abroad. Some study English for
integrative reasons. They simply enjoy it and want to make new friends.

This document contains practical suggestions for teaching strategies that will assist the University’s
international students. Some of the suggestions may seem self-evident as they represent widely
accepted principles of effective teaching in higher education. Nonetheless they are worth reiterating.
The University of Melbourne endeavours to create environments which foster academic excellence
and which encourage all students to engage with their learning communities.

Everything about my host tells me that he is, by nature, a democratic and diplomatic kind of
guy. But between the lines I think I catch the scent of something else—the passion of the
people who see my grammar column in their local newspapers and send me e-mails saying,
“As a fellow grammar and usage Nazi …” or, “Keep fighting against abuse of the language!”

A further look at soil remineralization and its tremendous positive potentials will be of
value here. Due to long-time general neglect of the need for balanced remineralization, these
potentials are scarcely known, both by practitioners of the widespread “soil mining” chemical
agriculture, and by the “organic,” “bio-dynamic,” and “eco-agriculture” practitioners.

These
last individuals have generally gone beyond the use of acidified chemical nutrients and toxic
sprays, yet their means of producing food are often dependent on extracting fertility from one
piece of land in order to enrich another, i.e. “robbing Peter to pay Paul.” Meanwhile the
overall fertility of the Earth continues to decline.

The first crop grown in that rejuvenated topsoil was clover. The organism development in
that soil must have been awesome, because the plants showed no interest in terminating
growth—reaching 12 feet in length when autumn’s cold called a halt. Initial attempts to disk
that clover back into the soil failed when the stalks proved too thick to cut. The writer is not
exaggerating. The clover root systems were no doubt massive as well.

There is not likely to be a shortage of accessible mixed rock anywhere in the world —
even the Sahara desert and Brazil are underlaid with till from ancient glaciations (John, 1980)
— only a shortage of environmentally constructive systems set up for quarrying, grinding,
distributing and recycling the nutrients; and a lack of awareness of the need.

What is an error in English? The concept of language errors is a fuzzy one. I’ll leave to linguists the technical definitions. Here we’re concerned only with deviations from the standard use of English as judged by sophisticated users such as professional writers, editors, teachers, and literate executives and personnel officers. The aim of this site is to help you avoid low grades, lost employment opportunities, lost business, and titters of amusement at the way you write or speak. But isn’t one person’s mistake another’s standard usage? Often enough, but if your standard usage causes other people to consider you...

Most important, this edition adds more than 500 new words and terms that
have come into common use since the previous edition was published. The addi-
tions are by no means comprehensive, but they include some of the most promi-
nent new locutions in a language that has grown increasingly rich. The Queen’s
English, often regarded as a paradigm of correct and proper usage, has been
busy absorbing words and phrases from diverse sources—some reflecting new
political alignments, some from overseas, many from the argot of the street. ...
