Strategies used in giving advice by English and Vietnamese students
Cultural knowledge plays an important role in learning language. To help English learners enrich their cultural knowledge, this study is to find out the similarities and differences in the ways of giving advice of English and Vietnamese students. The study uses a quantitative method to collect data by carrying out a survey questionnaire among 60 students from different universities.

The necessity of assessment for learning in building integrated language skills
Statistics and reality show beyond doubt that assessment is an integral part of any training programme at all levels. Assessment does not simply mean those activities and principles of measuring the learner’s achievement at the end of a specific course. Assessment can involve a range of forms and serve a number of purposes, of which measuring learner achievement for administration purposes and measuring learner achievement for improving learning and increasing motivation are of worldwide interest.

Personal-response approach vs reader-response approach in literature-based English language teaching
This paper discusses the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches and points out that the notion of PRA limits the value of the students’ responses and demonstrates how the applying of RRA in literaturebased language classes strengthens such an instruction.

Maximising the teaching of listening and speaking skills in large sized classes
In a foreign language class, it is probably acknowledged that classes should be small enough for learners to acquire knowledge more easily and for teachers to organize teaching and learning activities effectively in accordance with the level of the learners. Using flipgrid to empower students speaking
Recently, communicative language teaching (CLT) approach has been more on emphasis in English lessons at Thuyloi University. Students are more encouraged to speak in English and take part in communicative activities. Teachers at Department of English keep making use of all facilities and CLT activities in the class with the hope to have students engage in the lesson and have chance to practice speaking skill as much as possible.

The impact of communicative language learning activities on students’ attitude towards learning English
The author is currently an English teacher at Thuyloi University (TLU). The participants in this study were non-English major students from different parts of Vietnam. Most them had limited English capability, as they didn’t spend much time learning it.

The use of role play to improve the student’s speaking skill
In summary, role play is motivating and effective to practicing speaking. The classroom is easily set up and broadened to the outside world with a much wider range of language opportunities. This enables students to practice the target language, interact with one another, build confidence and put learning into action.

Using online newspapers to enhance students’ reading skills: An action research at Thai Nguyen University
The action research was conducted to test the ideas that using online newspapers written in English enhances students reading skills and cultivates their positive attitude towards extensive reading (ER). The participants were 42 second-year students at School of Foreign Languages – Thai Nguyen University (SFL-TNU). Reading materials were selected from a local online newspaper in English.

Learners’ perceptions of the implementation of video recording as a speaking practice
To address these problems, several activities and methods have been employed and implemented in the speaking course and among them, video recording has been proved to be an efficient way and has been widely used recently. The aim of this research is to examine if students consider this an effective activity for speaking, which decides their level of participation in speaking practices and also their speaking performances in general.

Students’ perceptions on the use of role-play technique in ESP speaking lessons
Teaching speaking skill is generally considered one of the most challenging tasks to teachers of English in a non-native teaching and learning environment. The teaching technique that teachers often apply in the class is the adoption of role-play because teachers believe that role plays offer learners the chance to practice speaking English before they must do in an authentic situation.

Speaking anxiety revisited and some pedagogical implications
To achieve this aim, two research questions were formulated as follows: 1. What are the effects of foreign language speaking anxiety (FLSA) on English language learning? 2. What factors contribute to learners’ speaking anxiety? The findings of this paper would be helpful for language teachers to adjust and adapt their teaching methodology to deal with learners’ speaking anxiety and improve their learners’ performance and achievement accordingly.
