New Headway Intermediate is a practical and imaginative addition to the New Headway English Course. Its aim is to help students to express themselves both clearly and confidently, by training them in the key areas of pronunciation, in particulary the production of individual sounds, word and sentence stress and intonation.
The course, with its accompanying audio cd, is suitable for self-study as well as for classroom use. Although it recycles the language and topics of New Headway Intermediate Student’s Book, it is also suitable for intermediate students following any course who wish to improve their pronunciation....

For example, what
is the connection between the words fish and scales? Obviously, a fish is covered with scales; now think of two other
words that share a similar relationship.A good example of this would be bird and feathers. The similarity between
these two unrelated pairs of words is an analogy. The best way to approach an analogy question is to make up a
sentence that describes the relationship between the first two words and find another pair in the choices that would
fit into that same sentence. A fish is covered with scales, as a bird is covered with feathers....

It is, however, easy to confuse the main idea or theme with the subject. Basically, the subject of a piece of writing is what that piece is generally about, plain and simple - the facts and information. However, when you look past the facts and information to the heart of what writers are trying to say, and why they are saying it, that’s the main idea or theme.

Read the following paragraphs and carefully determine
what the main idea is for each. The best way to
approach these questions is to first read the paragraph
and then, in your own words, restate what you think the
author is trying to say. From the five choices, select the
one statement that best supports the author’s point.

The Fourth Amendment to the Constitution
protects citizens against unreasonable searches
and seizures. No search of a person’s home or
personal effects may be conducted without a
written search warrant issued on probable cause.
This means that a neutral judge must approve
the factual basis justifying a search before it can be
conducted.

In the last section, you learned what a main idea is. Often, writers express their main idea in a clearly
defined sentence known as a topic sentence. Topic sentences are usually found at the beginning of a paragraph
in order to immediately establish the main idea. But this is not always the case—topic sentences can
be found anywhere in a paragraph, and sometimes, the author chooses not to use one at all. Still, looking for the
topic sentence is a good skill to have when ferreting out the meaning of a reading passage....

This is your first chance to use everything
you’ve learned so far. Pay special attention to the details and the facts, and make a habit of trying to
identify the author’s main idea; also, try to think of the author’s motive for writing the passage. As newspaper
reporters do, ask the questions, “Who? What? When? Where? How? and Why?” Is the author’s purpose to inform
you of facts, persuade you of something, or simply to entertain you?
As you read, try marking up the passages or taking notes. The more active a reader you are, the more likely
that you will understand and fully enjoy what...

Every year,Americans use over one billion sharp
objects to administer healthcare in their homes.
These sharp objects include lancets, needles, and
syringes. If not disposed of in puncture-resistant
containers, they can injure sanitation workers.
Sharp objects should be disposed of in hard
plastic or metal containers with secure lids. The
containers should be clearly marked and be
puncture resistant.

Remember what you’ve learned so far. Look at structure. Look for the main idea of the passage. Consider
the purpose for which the passage was written. What clues can you deduce from the writing style about the
author’s attitude toward the subject? Is the attitude positive? Negative? Objective? Try to pick out individual
words that further each writer’s intent and support each writer’s opinion. If it helps, underline or make notes
on important points. Active reading techniques like these will keep you focused on some very detailed reading
comprehension passages....

Litigation is not always the only or best way to
resolve conflicts.Mediation offers an alternative
approach and it is one that can be quite efficient
and successful. Mediation can be faster, less
expensive, and can lead to creative solutions not
always possible in a court of law. Additionally,
mediation focuses on mutually acceptable solutions,
rather than on winning or losing.

Health clubs have undergone a major transformation
that can be described in three words:
mind, body, and spirit. Loud, fast, heart-thumping
aerobics has been replaced by the hushed tones of
yoga and the controlled movements of Pilates.
The clubs are responding to the needs of their
customers who are increasingly looking for a
retreat from their hectic lifestyles and a way to
find a healthy balance in their lives by nurturing
their whole selves.

An ecosystem is a group of animals and plants living
in a specific region and interacting with one
another and with their physical environment.
Ecosystems include physical and chemical components,
such as soils, water, and nutrients that
support the organisms living there. These organisms
may range from large animals to microscopic
bacteria. Ecosystems also can be thought of
as the interactions among all organisms in a given
habitat; for instance, one species may serve as
food for another. People are part of the ecosystems
where they live and work.Human activities
can harm or destroy local ecosystems unless
actions such as land development for housing or
businesses are carefully planned to conserve and
sustain the ecology...

Complementary and alternative medicine,
which includes a range of practices outside of
conventional medicine such as herbs, homeopathy,
massage therapy, yoga, and acupuncture, hold
increasing appeal for Americans. In fact, according
to one estimate, 42% of Americans have used
alternative therapies. In all age groups, the use of
unconventional healthcare practices has steadily
increased in the last 30 years, and the trend is
likely to continue, although people born before
1945 are the least likely to turn to these therapies....

This book has been written for students who are planning to take the Cambridge First Certificate in
English (the FCE) and who want to develop their vocabulary for the exam.
The various exercises throughout the book focus on the vocabulary that FCE students would expect to
use in the Speaking, Writing and Use of English papers, or that they might come across in the Reading
or Listening papers.

Apart from condemming tobacco companies and rising the price of cigarettes, the goverment's antismoking
campain has failed to have any long-term affects, and the only people bennefitting from it are
the Inland Revenue departement. Meanwhile, the National Health Service says it may refuse to treat
persistant smokers. Of course, this hasn't prevented the big tobbaco companys spending vast amounts
of money on advertiseing.

It is becomming increasingly difficcult for many people to find decent accomodation in London at a
price they can afford. To put it simpley, most people just don't have the necesary funds. Organiseations
such as Home Front can offer advise, but it widely agreed that the situation is no longer managable.
The fact that city councils are building cheap, tempory housing for lower-paid profesionals is the only
official acknowledgment of this problem.

A lot of verbs can be changed to adjectives by the addition of a suffix (e.g., -able, -ous, -ful)
to the end of the word. Some verbs can have more than one adjective form (e.g., bore =
boring or bored). Sometimes you may need to remove or change a letter at the end of the
word before adding a suffix (e.g. vary = variable)

word has been underlined. When you have finished, you will find another word which means
'to make a building like new again' in the shaded vertical strip. Read the descriptions 1 - 14 and decide which type of accommodation is being described in
each one. Use your dictionary to look up the meanings of the adjectives in bold.

designer Jean-Claude Cliché. Of course, many
people would say that high heels, a tartan

him? He's wearing jeans and trainers, a striped
shirt and a white waistcoat.

Moving Beyond a Traditional Approach. The traditional approach to
developmental writing has been to review the rules of grammar, punctuation,
and usage and then to test the students’ understanding of those rules through a
series of chapter tests. However, as research and experience have demonstrated,
there is no necessary correlation between the study of grammar and the
development of competent writers.

At the end of the text, answers to the practices—but not to the exercises—are
provided. These answers allow the students to check their understanding of
the material as they read the text. The extensive exercises without answers
permit the instructor to determine where more explanation or study is
needed.

Ask sk the children to open their books at pages 4 and 5.
Draw their attention to the unit title and explain the
meaning of imagination if necessary. Read and discuss the
questions with the class. Encourage them to use as much English as possible, but let them use L1 where necessary. First read the words in red and explain their meanings
where necessary (or you could give the children a few
minutes to look up the words in dictionaries). Model and
drill pronunciation.

The English language dates back to the 400s, when Germanic tribes, including
Angles and Saxons, invaded the island that came to be known (because of the
Angles) as England. The epic poem Beowulf was written down around 1000 in
the Anglo-Saxon language, known as Old English. Middle English developed
following the 1066 invasion of the Normans, who came from France. Geoffrey
Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales (completed around 1400) is written in Middle
English. Modern English originated in the 16th century....

Given the complexity of the area, the surprise is that learners are very
keen to master it. They seem to sense that multi-word verbs are a vital
component of English, and spoken English in particular. There is also the
feeling that an understanding of common idioms will increase their
comprehension, though most students instinctively avoid trying to
produce them.
