Molecular diagnosis of human metapneumovirus infection among egyptian Infants with acute bronchiolitis

Lower respiratory tract infections are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children worldwide. Several viruses can cause bronchiolitis. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza viruses (PIV), influenza type A, adenovirus and human metapneumovirus (HMPV) are some of the common viruses found in hospital studies. This study aimed to study the molecular diagnosis of HPMV infections by using a realtime, reverse-transcriptase PCR assay and the evaluation of its prevalence among Egyptian infants clinically diagnosed with acute viral bronchiolitis. Also to detect other common respiratory viruses and determine the presence of coinfections of HPMV and other respiratory viruses, we tested the presence of common respiratory tract viruses by using immunofluorescence respiratory screen test in 50 Egyptian infants diagnosed with acute bronchitis and also screened the tested samples for the presence of HMPV by using realtime RT PCR. Our results revealed that 16% of the cases were positive for HMPV, 76% were positive for the other tested common respiratory tract viruses and 12% showed coinfection.

Blood stream infection in pediatric patients of a tertiary care hospital: A bacteriological and antimicrobial profile

Blood stream infections are very common in the pediatric age group and these are one of the common causes of morbidity and mortality in neonates and children. In developing countries, the rate of blood stream infections in children is about 20– 50% and it is estimated that one in five neonates is suffering from and blood infection. The present study was undertaken to determine the etiological agents causing blood stream infection and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns in pediatric patients.

Detection of human bocavirus in Egyptian children suffering from acute lower respiratory tract infection

Human bocavirus (HBoV) was first identified as parvovirus in 2005 in nasopharyngeal aspirates of children with lower respiratory tract infection. The objectives of this study were to determine HBoV as a cause of acute lower respiratory tract infection(ALRTI) in children by investigating the presence of HBoV DNA, to evaluate diagnostic efficiency of HBov IgM assay in the serum of the studied patients and to assess the impact of the viral load on the clinical manifestations of children with positive HBoV DNA samples. We investigated 123-nasopharyngeal aspirate samples of hospitalized children with ALRTI by Real-time PCR for detection of HBoV DNA and estimating its viral load. Estimation of immunoglobulin M (IgM) by ELISA in patient’s serum samples was another method used for diagnosis of HBoV infection. There were 19 patients with positive nasopharyngeal aspirate samples by PCR among them there were 16 serum samples positive for HBoV IgM by ELISA (sensitivity was 84.2%). Longer hospital stay and severe ALRTI signs were detected in children samples with high viral load (16 samples).

Study of Bifidobacteria species and asthma in children below two years: One center experience

Bifidobacteria species (spp.) is common component of normal gut flora. In recent years there are evidences that changes in these species may be associated with asthma in children. The aim of the present study was to study the various components of Bifidobacterium species by culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from the stool from children with bronchial asthma compared to healthy children.

Screening, isolation and identification of Lactobacillus Species from dental caries of children

Caries is a chronic disease that progresses slowly and is characterized by localized and irreversible destruction of the tooth. The microbial community of dental caries with many of the facultatively and obligately anaerobic bacteria, Lactobacillus have been consistently associated with dental caries for decades. The aim of this study was the isolation and characterization of Lactobacillus species, which are commonly present on the surface of dental caries of children.

Study of antibiotic resistance among uropathogens and feacal commensal Escherichia coli in pediatrics age group to revise the role of Feacal Escherichia coli as a reservoir of antibiotic resistance

Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem in pediatric urology as nonselective use of prophylaxis, and poor empiric prescribing practices. The feacal reservoir provides optimal conditions for the transmission of resistance genes within and between bacterial species as gut is exposed to large number of bacteria.

Multidrug resistant bacteria in pediatric patients: A therapeutic nightmare

Bacterial infections caused by multidrug resistant bacteria (MDR) are a constant challenge for physicians throughout the world. We processed 451 clinical samples (blood, urine, pus and body fluids) from pediatric patients during the period of July’11 to Oct’11 in Sassoon General Hospital, Pune. Objective is to identify the bacterial isolates from different clinical specimens and study their antibiotics susceptibility pattern. Bacterial infections could be detected in 155 (34.4%) patients. These bacteria were isolated from blood (61%), urine (23%), pus (14%) and body fluid (2%). 64.6% of the infections were from the ward and 35.5% from NICU. 88.4% were gram negative bacilli and 11.7% were gram positive cocci.

Serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels in children with nephrotic syndrome and its correlation with biochemical parameters

The aim of this study is to compare the levels of TNF-α in children with nephrotic syndrome and healthy control children and the correlation of TNF-α with clinical feature of NS. Fifty children with NS were divided into four groups: 14 steroid sensitive infrequent relapse (SSIFR), 12 steroid sensitive frequent relapse (SSFR), 9 steroid resistance (SR) and 15 newly diagnosis (ND) compared to twenty-five unrelated healthy children. The serum IL-13 levels for NS patients and healthy control children were measured by R&D quantitative ELISA kit. Serum levels of TNF-α showed highly significant difference between patients with NS (15.68 ± 2.38pg/ml) and healthy control (1.066 ± 0.65pg/ml), and there is no significant different among NS groups. Highly significant correlation between TNF-α mean level and biochemical markers of NS patients also reported in this study.
