Five keys to successful PoE deployment

Before 802.3af, vendors and consumers of IP phones were faced with two options: Provide local power through an AC (alternating current) electrical outlet, or use non-standards-based proprietary solutions to provide inline powering. Both choices were equally unappealing.

Endface Geometry and Connector Reliability in the Outside Plant

Abstract: Recent wide-scale deployment of APC connectors in the outside plant for FTTH initiatives has forced connector manufacturers to consider reliability issues of these connectors. Angled connectors exhibit two phenomena not found in non-angled connectors: First, the lower ferrule endface radius of angled connectors makes the connector more susceptible to permanent fiber withdrawal at elevated temperatures. Second, any rotation of the ferrule in angled connectors will increase the apex offset of the connector. These phenomena may result in loss of physical contact between the fibers of a mated connector pair. This air gap may increase reflectance and insertion loss, reducing system reliability. The air gap may also allow...

Secret of power

Check the troubleshooting guide for any electrical appliance, and the first question will probably be, “Is it plugged in?” Go ahead and laugh (unless you’re the red-faced guy reaching for the plug), but the point is plain: Electrical devices need power. And if the device is part of a critical communications system, problems with power definitely can be serious.

CopperTen™ Cabling Solution Making the Impossible Possible

For years, copper UTP solutions have been the preferred medium over which most Local Area Networks communicate. And in this same period, a debate has raged as to when fiber would displace copper as the preferred infrastructure. Several years ago Gigabit Ethernet seemed like a pipe dream, yet today Gigabit Switch port sales have overtaken 10/100BaseT of old.

Several years ago, a major university in the Midwest faced a problem — its faculty, staff and student communities were frustrated with poor wireless communications in and around the campus complex. In an era where mobile communication must be clear and always on, the less-than-ideal coverage in campus buildings and around the campus grounds became unacceptable. The university itself featured several, historic concrete structures. The architecture of these facilities proved difficult for wireless communications as cellular users lost calls as they walked through doors and into classrooms throughout the campus....

Digivance® ICS For Healthcare Applications

Studies have shown that radiation from cell phones has the potential to interfere with cardiopulmonary monitoring devices, and in some cases may even cause malfunction of patient ventilators1. Such evidence would seem to indicate that cell phones constitute a significant risk to patient health and safety, warranting their ban from hospital facilities. But many of the same hospitals that are banning cell phones are, at the same time, bringing more and more wireless equipment into the hospital environment. Wireless Local Area Networks (LANs) are being installed at a rapid rate. The mobile access to medical records provided by wireless LANs is being touted for its benefits to patients,...

Connectors in FTTP Networks Which Connector Do I Use in My FTTP Network?

A Connector is a device used to provide a semi-permanent link between two optical fibers. Connectors must be able to maintain good optical contact between the fibers at the connector interfaces. In theory, only the cross sectional face of the two fibers need to touch, hence the term Physical Contact (PC) connector is used. The basic components of a connector include the body, the ferrule, the barrel (coupling nut/insert), and the boot. The body is the physical shell of the connector, which houses the mechanism used to secure the fiber to the connector. The ferrule is the long cylinder-like piece....

Designing for Profitability in the Physical Layer of Wireless Networks

Growth in wireless services is increasing the number of copper and fiber cables that must be managed – causing an increased workload for reconfigurations and maintenance. Meeting the challenge of increasing profits in the face of fewer capital and operating resources to manage this steadily growing and more complex wireless network infrastructure requires improvements in operational efficiency from Network Operations. This paper discusses the proven solution for increasing operational efficiency – designing a foundation of connectivity into the physical layer that helps connect, protect and manage cables without disrupting service....

Urban Wireless Coverage Street-Level Service

The increase in popularity of wireless devices has caused mobile subscribers to demand coverage anytime and anywhere. Wireless service providers are challenged with cost-effectively providing adequate coverage and capacity precisely where it is needed. This is particularly difficult in urban areas due to zoning restrictions and congestion from tall buildings that limit the placement of cell sites for additional capacity.

STUDYRural Wireless CoverageCoastline Highway and Interior Canyons

Long stretches of open highway would seem like pretty simple areas in which to provide wireless coverage. However, when the highway is located along a scenic coastline within a rural canyon, providing wireless service becomes more challenging. In addition to providing adequate capacity, the location of new cell sites is restricted in consideration for the area's natural scenery.

Delivering Services over FTTP

Home Town Cable Plus is an integrated service provider operating in the city of Port St. Lucie as well as in the county of St. Lucie in Florida. Just three years ago, the new company embarked upon its plan to build a passive optical network (PON) to link homes and businesses in its service area to the company data center. Home Town officially opened for business in September 2003 with a bundle that includes standard POTS as well as alarm and monitoring services. In addition, Home Town offers 217 channels of SDV (switched digital video) and gigabit Ethernet high-speed Internet service over the advanced IP-based network....

Fiber Management Trays

Today’s optical transmission equipment can transmit astonishing amounts of data, video, or telephone conversations. Additionally, better technology has resulted in densely populated Fiber Optic Terminal (FOT) equipment frames. These two factors added together make the fibers at the FOT very valuable. However, up to now, the emphasis on managing these fibers has been minimal.

Managing Ethernet Services

A major telecommunications service provider chose to roll-out 10/100Base-T and Gigabit Ethernet services to business customers nationwide. With higher bandwidth and at a lower cost per bit than circuit-based data delivery such as T1 and T3, the new Ethernet LAN services would draw immediate interest from customers. Once the multi-service platform was selected for transport of 10/100Base-T over copper cabling and Gigabit Ethernet over fiber, attention turned to designing an infrastructure for management of a service offering that could impact operations across the country....

DC Power: Is it Time to Switch?

As operators move from the realm of being video-only providers to serving up data and telephony, they should consider the option of DC powering for multiple services There was a time when cable was simple. Operators had virtual monopolies, so competition was not an issue. They delivered a single programming feed, leaving any sorting out to be done at the set-top. And powering headend or hub equipment was nearly as simple as plugging a toaster into an AC outlet.
