Fiber To The Premises A Deployment Guide for Network Managers

There has never been more pressure on bandwidth and cable plant. The resources of cable providers and telephone companies are being stretched to the limit due to the addition of such items as second lines for children, computers, security and the advent of the “smart house.” This situation is compounded by the race to offer the telecommunications “triple play” – a combination of voice services; cable TV and video on demand; and high-speed data and Internet access. Until now, phone companies have lacked the video portion, since their existing copper infrastructure has had only enough bandwidth to support broadband and voice....

Dramatic Attenuation in Fiber Access Terminals at Low Temperatures

It is common in applications where access terminals are used to terminate only a portion of the fibers brought into the enclosure–allowing the remainder of the fibers to pass through. When loose tube cable is used, the sub-units that are not terminated are expressed through, and the sub-unit material is not opened at any point. To provide customers with adequate sub-unit length for splicing under all conditions, ADC specifies a mid-span access length of 150 to 170. Testing of the enclosure with expressed sub-units of this length alerted ADC to potential low temperature issues....

Enhancing Angle-Polished Connector (APC) Performance in the Outside Plant (OSP)

Fiber-to-the-premise architectures, by their very nature, require numerous fiber connections for distribution of services to multiple home and business locations. Much of the connectorization takes place downstream from the central office in the outside plant (OSP) portion of the network, traditionally a splice-only environment. However, as providers realize the cost-saving benefits – ease of testing/troubleshooting, simpler network reconfiguration, faster service turn-up – the need for higher performance of angle-polished connectors (APCs) in the OSP environment has become a critical FTTP issue....

Challenges of Cold Temperatures on OSP Cable Assemblies for FTTP

Fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) architectures are presenting both new challenges and new opportunities regarding the use of connectors in the outside plant (OSP). At no other time have connectors been as necessary in OSP architectures – and they are destined to become even more prevalent in the days ahead as the FTTP networking market continues to gain momentum. Service providers competing for the FTTP market require the same flexibility in test access and the ability to provision that they have typically enjoyed in the central office. They need to scale service in a cost-effective manner....

Pro PatchTM Optical Normal Through Panel

ADC’s Optical Normal Through Panel is the latest addition to its Pro Patch line of broadcast patching products. This fiber panel is designed to provide patch by exception, normal through functionality, similar to copper-based patch panels. Traditional fiber patch panels require a fiber jumper to be in place at all times. With this newly designed panel, however, all fiber “Source” and “Destination” connections are on the rear of the panel, with a normal through connection between the “Source” and “Destination” ports. For greater convenience and reliability, patch and monitoring capabilities are accessed on the front of the panel....

Private SONET Networks for Enterprise Customers

Private SONET networks provide large multi-site enterprise customers and campuses a simple cost-effective way to interconnect each site or building using their own fiber, leasing SONET bandwidth or leasing dark fiber. Large enterprise customers typically have multiple sites in a metro or campus area. In addition to requiring connectivity to corporate headquarters, many of these sites need to be interconnected. Since building a physical mesh network can become quite expensive, enterprise customers require a cost-effective solution that can interconnect their sites. Similar issues apply to large government, educational, military, or healthcare organizations that have multiple buildings at a given site. Using SONET equipment, enterprise customers can build private SONET...

Splicing vs. Connectorization in FTTP Networking

Deploying a successful fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) network requires careful planning and execution. It is clear after many years of trials that FTTP is here to stay. Taking FTTP networks from the lab/field trial mode to full-scale network deployment presents many significant challenges for service providers. One of these challenges is deploying the network for the lowest possible cost, while creating a fiber network infrastructure that has the flexibility and reliability to last long into the future....

Migration to GPON – Practical Considerations from the Central Office to the Outside Plant

Gazing into the future may be possible for the few clairvoyants living among us, but building a telecommunication network based on psychic prediction would be like basing critical business decisions on a coin flip. Still, today’s telecommunication buzzword for any fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) network is “future-proofing.” Without a crystal ball to examine future bandwidth needs and determine winning technologies, service providers face some major challenges in getting it right the first time....
