The LoopStar 800 SONET Access System enables service providers to cost effectively deploy a
fiber-based solution to address locations where copper-based M13 multiplexers are typically
deployed. While providing an effective alternative to copper-based M13s, the LoopStar 800 can
deliver other advanced services simultaneously from the same system. As a result, the LoopStar
800 provides increased network visibility through its SONET management features and supports
other services without significantly increasing the per port cost over traditional M13 multiplexers....

ADC’s innovative line of indoor/outdoor
armored loose tube cables are designed to
meet all the rigors of the outside plant
environment and have the necessary fire
ratings to be installed inside the building.
These cables eliminate the messy gel filler of
traditional loose tube style cables with super
absorbent polymers. The installer can place the
cable anywhere in the network, bypassing the
traditional transition points required in most
installations. Cables are available with fiber
counts from 2 to 144 fibers....

ADC’s breakout cables offer quick and easy
connector installation onto jacketed fiber
eliminating the need for splicing or fanout kits.
An outer jacket protects the fiber subunits.
The cable is UL listed plenum or riser as
required for the application. Breakout cable
construction is exceptionally robust and
provides superior mechanical performance
with excellent crush and impact protection.

ADC’s line of outdoor all-dielectric loose tube
cables with polyethylene jackets are designed
to meet all the rigors of the outside plant
environment. The cable core is protected from
moisture with a water swellable tape,
eliminating the need for a filling compound.
Terminations require less effort making the
installation easier.

ADC’s HDSL2/4 line cards provide visibility of faulty or missing remote chassis frame ground
connections on a real-time basis. A remote unit not connected to frame ground is susceptible to
poor performance and possible damage to HDSL and other transmission equipment. This has
become an increasingly critical factor in the delivery of T1 service to cell sites. Cell sites are
particularly vulnerable to power surges, induction and changes in ground potential caused by RF
transmission equipment and lightning strikes. By determining whether or not frame ground is
connected at the remote, the RFGD feature helps the customer to avoid potential problems....

As fiber-to-the-x (FTTX) architectures gain momentum as a means for delivering
high-speed broadband services to homes and small businesses, many questions
have surfaced regarding the best way to connect the large number of drop
cables feeding into the network. Drop cables typically connect each optical
network terminal (ONT) at the subscriber premise to a fiber access terminal
where they are then connected to a main fiber distribution cable.

ADC's Building Entrance Terminals provide high-density primary protection and are fully compliant
to UL® and Telcordia specifications. These units are ideal for applications where lockable
enclosures are not required, such as controlled environment cabinets and vaults, secure equipment
rooms and frames.

The LoopStar SONET product family provides traditional Add/Drop Multiplexer (ADM) functionality
to deliver TDM and data services. SONET has a long history as the service providers’ transport
mechanism of choice due to its reliability, traffic grooming capabilities, and simplified remote
management. With recent developments in Ethernet over SONET (EOS), SONET ADMs now have
the capability to effectively groom Ethernet traffic onto the SONET backbone. With the rise in
FTTX deployments for triple play, and the SONET ADM’s ability to effectively transport both TDM
and Ethernet traffic, the demand for SONET add/drop rings will continue to increase....

The emergence of 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10-
GigE) began with a surge in demand from data
centers and information-hungry markets, such
as higher education, financial management,
healthcare, engineering design, research and
development, and government institutions.
Today, the acceptance of Gigabit Ethernet moving
to the desktop drives the need for 10-GigE
in the backbone.

One night in 1996, an unusually hard rain sent a wall
of water onto the campus of Colorado State University
(CSU) in Fort Collins, Colo. The flood gutted
the ground floor and basement levels of 14 buildings, submerging
main distribution frames in each building. Panels
were ripped from walls, rooms filled with mud, patch cords
floated away, and fiber optic cable filled with water. No one
on campus was hurt but, needless to say, the network was
down.

If, in this political season, you are reminded that politics makes strange bedfellows, consider that deregulation
makes even stranger ones. Not only are voice and data converging, but, in the process, incumbent and competitive
carriers are literally becoming roommates, sharing facilities in central offices and remote locations as
mandated by the FCC. It may not be a match made in heaven, but it is part of a market explosion that could be
rewarding for all involved.

The successful deployment of any flexible, cost-effective fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP)
network requires thoughtful decisions regarding all segments of the network, from the
optical line terminal (OLT) in the central office to the optical network terminal (ONT)
attached to each home and everything in between. While much attention is focused on
the distribution and access elements within the outside plant (OSP) network, it’s also
important to consider the implications of FTTP architectures within the central office (CO)....

“ADC has a large and diverse selection of panels with
different capabilities for unique requirements. With
the help of Graybar and ADC engineering, we were
able to identify the exact features we wanted,” said
DeBrock. After manufacturing DSX-1 and DSX-3 panels
for the specific needs of carriers for the past 20
years, ADC offers a broad portfolio of DS1 and DS3
products, each featuring different combinations of
front or rear access, equipment cable termination,
density and cable management features....

The OptEnet Optical Extension platform has expanded to include a single-mount solution, which
can be positioned on a desktop or wall. The unit can be deployed as the remote termination
device linked to the OptEnet modular platform or in a single-circuit, point-to-point configuration.
The device converts standards-based electrical Ethernet signals to fiber, enabling cost-effective,
flexible Ethernet extensions across a wide area or local area network (WAN or LAN).

Based on growing bandwidth and service demands, the ideal network would
be founded on an all fiber cable infrastructure. The expensive electronics located
along this high-speed network would be equipped with fiber interfaces to take
advantage of the medium’s bandwidth, resistance to EMI, better security, and
freedom from confining distance limitations.
