In an essay on The Problem of Philosophy at the Present Time, Professor Edward Caird says that
philosophy is not a first venture into a new field of thought, but the rethinking of a secular and religious
consciousness which has been developed, in the main, independently of philosophy.[vii:A] If there be any
inspiration and originality in this book, they are due to my great desire that philosophy should appear in its
vital relations to more familiar experiences. If philosophy is, as is commonly assumed, appropriate to a phase
in the development of every individual, it should grow out of interests to which he is already...

Two years ago, in the preface to another essay, the present writer ventured to affirm that Civilisation moves
rather towards a chaos than towards a cosmos. But he could not foretell that the descensus Averni would be
so alarmingly rapid.
When we find Science, which has done so much and promised so much for the happiness of mankind,
devoting so large a proportion of its resources to the destruction of human life, we are prone to ask
despairingly--Is this the end? If not; how are we to discover and assure for stricken Humanity the vision and
the possession of a Better Land?...

Of all writers of speculative philosophy, both ancient and modern, there is probably no one who has attained so eminent a position as Plato. What Homer was to Epic poetry, what Cicero and Demosthenes were to
oratory, and what Shakespeare was to the drama of England, Plato was to ancient philosophy, not
unapproachable nor unapproached, but possessing an inexplicable but unquestioned supremacy.

The Text which has been mostly followed in this Translation of Plato is the latest 8vo. edition of Stallbaum;
the principal deviations are noted at the bottom of the page.
I have to acknowledge many obligations to old friends and pupils. These are:--Mr. John Purves, Fellow of
Balliol College, with whom I have revised about half of the entire Translation; the Rev. Professor Campbell,
of St. Andrews, who has helped me in the revision of several parts of the work, especially of the Theaetetus,
Sophist, and Politicus; Mr. Robinson Ellis, Fellow of Trinity College, and Mr. Alfred Robinson, Fellow of
New College, who read with me...

The Critias is a fragment which breaks off in the middle of a sentence. It was designed to be the second part of
a trilogy, which, like the other great Platonic trilogy of the Sophist, Statesman, Philosopher, was never
completed. Timaeus had brought down the origin of the world to the creation of man, and the dawn of history
was now to succeed the philosophy of nature. The Critias is also connected with the Republic. Plato, as he has
already told us (Tim.), intended to represent the ideal state engaged in a patriotic conflict. This mythical
conflict is prophetic or symbolical of the struggle of...

The Crito seems intended to exhibit the character of Socrates in one light only, not as the philosopher,
fulfilling a divine mission and trusting in the will of heaven, but simply as the good citizen, who having been
unjustly condemned is willing to give up his life in obedience to the laws of the state...
The days of Socrates are drawing to a close; the fatal ship has been seen off Sunium, as he is informed by his
aged friend and contemporary Crito, who visits him before the dawn has broken; he himself has been warned
in a dream that on the third day he...

The Cratylus has always been a source of perplexity to the student of Plato. While in fancy and humour, and
perfection of style and metaphysical originality, this dialogue may be ranked with the best of the Platonic
writings, there has been an uncertainty about the motive of the piece, which interpreters have hitherto not
succeeded in dispelling. We need not suppose that Plato used words in order to conceal his thoughts, or that
he would have been unintelligible to an educated contemporary. In the Phaedrus and Euthydemus we also find
a difficulty in determining the precise aim of the author. Plato wrote satires in the...

In several of the dialogues of Plato, doubts have arisen among his interpreters as to which of the various
subjects discussed in them is the main thesis. The speakers have the freedom of conversation; no severe rules
of art restrict them, and sometimes we are inclined to think, with one of the dramatis personae in the
Theaetetus, that the digressions have the greater interest. Yet in the most irregular of the dialogues there is
also a certain natural growth or unity; the beginning is not forgotten at the end, and numerous allusions and
references are interspersed, which form the loose connecting links of the whole....

The main concern of this book is scepticism about moral responsibility. By “moral
responsibility” I understand that property of human agents by virtue of which they truly
and objectively deserve moral praise or blame for some of their actions. We are naturally
non-sceptical about this property. Even philosophical sceptics tend to praise or blame
people spontaneously for some of their actions, though they may try to recoil from these
spontaneous reactions after reminding themselves of their own reflectively acquired
scepticism....

many people. They include Michael E. Zimmerman, John

version of this book, Michael McCully and especially Julie
Rudd, for reading the final draft.

As our understanding of human genetics has increased at an explosive rate
over the last half century, genetic knowledge has become more relevant to
us and to those we love. In the 1990s and early 2000s, scientists mapped the
human genome and began to understand the ways in which a variety of different
genes function in human beings. Their initial goal was to gain information
and insight into how the genes we are born with might affect our
lives and the lives of our children.

It is a matter of immense satisfaction for me that the first and
second editions of the book were bestsellers. This has motivated
me to bring the third revised and thoroughly refreshed edition
before the readers. The concept of emotional intelligence or
emotional quotient (EQ) has also gained popularity and acceptance
over the years. How well do you connect with yourself and
with others?

From coast to coast, employers search for the
ideal employee. Skills and experience count, but
most businesses are looking for something else, too:
character.
The kind of person you are matters to your employer.
One of the most important things you can do right
now for your career is to develop the type of character
that employers want.

This volume represents an attempt, to the best of my ability, to draw
together a decade of enquiries into the meaning of professionalism,
the relationship of educational theory and practice and the nature of
moral enquiry into a reasonably coherent whole. Although all these
topics have interested me throughout my professional educational life,
the path to this book can be traced back to an attempt in the summer
of 1990 to assemble a full-length exploration of the moral basis of
teaching and educational practice....

This book is an anthropological study of the impact of commercialism on
the professionalisation of sports medicine. In particular, it examines how
the embodied practice of sport in a professional environment places stress
on elite sporting participants. These individuals have better medical
provisions than were available to the competitors of yesteryear. But they
come at a price. The book investigates the relationship between
commercialism, medicine and the body, in order to establish the
importance of pain, injury and risk in the contemporary sporting world....

I grew up in the great Pacific Northwest, more specifically the
Puget Sound area, Tacoma to be precise. It rains frequently there,
and even when it’s not raining, it’s often overcast. I didn’t find that
nearly as depressing as some other residents do, especially those
raised in sunnier climates, but I certainly looked forward to days
when it was only partly cloudy, when blue sky, mountains, and sea
were at least occasionally visible.

This book presents an empirical inquiry, rooted in van Manen’s
hermeneutic phenomenology, describing the work experiences
of Indian call centre agents employed in international facing call
centres located in Bangalore and Mumbai. Through a holistic thematic
analysis, the study identifi es being professional as the core theme that
captures the essence of agents’ lived experience. The notion of professionalism
embraced agents’ identity, altering their self-concept and
enhancing their self-esteem....

Sometimes a word is worth a thousand words. Or an entire book.
“Ethics” is one of those words, with no shortage of book-length treatments.
The idea for a communication-centered investigation of ethics
and its relationship to professional life arose during the opening session
of George’s ethics class in the spring of 2003. Although the students
weren’t terribly excited by the idea of ethics, they became much
more animated when the discussion shifted to the term “morality.”

This book reviews the external affairs of the European Union (EU) from a very
distinct perspective. Different from existing literature on the EU’s international
role, we seek to find moral and ethical arguments and justifications on which
the Union ought to base its global policies. We ask, in other words, what ethical
foundations might there be for developing a larger role for the EU in
regional politics and global governance or, conversely, what moral factors could
potentially limit the scope of the EU’s external ambitions?...

My first experience in ethics came when I was a graduate student in
psychology in the late 1960s. I was working with a profoundly developmentally
disabled young man who was confined to a heavy metal crib
in the small ward of a private institution in Phoenix, Arizona. Blind,
deaf, nonambulatory, and not toilet trained, my “subject” engaged in
self-injurious behavior virtually all day long.

Religions have too often been used to justify the violation of human
rights, in part through the hierarchical and selective use of role ethics
and the postponement of temporal justice to divine judgment or future
karmic consequences. Yet the world religions have also provided a constant
voice of critique against the violation of human rights by calling for equality,
and universal compassion and love, calls which reach far beyond the
mere protection of human rights. The essays in this volume offer a diversity
of perspectives from the world religions and multiple dimensions of
the view that religion can – and indeed must – play an important role in
promoting...

This book grew out of the experiences of the late 1980s and early
1990s. The economic downturn and high interest rates scattered
financial distress around the world. Many private individuals and
corporations faced the grim reality of insolvency. The plague did not
distinguish between race, religion or nationality.
However, the social response to the malaise did. In many
countries the illness was diagnosed as terminal.

The professional practice of counseling and mental health has become
overly complex and litigious. Public outcry over recent corporate and government
scandals has led to a proliferation of litigation and has fueled calls
for increased ethics training and accountability for management professionals.
Not surprisingly, scrutiny of ethical practice has extended beyond
business and government to all professional sectors, including the mental
health profession.

What would you do if a dermatopathology laboratory offered to pay 85% of the cost

dressed two lockers over at the gym? And, what would you do if one of your
associates began to exhibit early signs of dementia?

Over the last twenty years, asylum has become one of the central issues in
the politics of liberal democratic states. In 1993 the German Parliament
embarked upon the politically onerous task of amending the country’s
constitution, the Basic Law, in order to slow the arrival of asylum seekers
on to state territory. One year later, the Clinton Administration in the
US, faced with criticism over its policy of summarily interdicting asylum
seekers on boats heading for Florida, launched a military intervention
into the island nation of Haiti, largely to restore a regime less likely to
produce refugees....

.ETHICS AND THE UNIVERSITY
Ethics and the University brings together two closely related topics, the practice of ethics in the university (“academic ethics”) and the teaching of practical or applied ethics in the university. The volume is divided into four parts: • a survey of practical ethics, offering an explanation of its recent emergence as a university subject, situating that subject within a wider social and historical context and identifying some problems that the subject generates for universities; • an examination of research ethics, including the problem of plagiarism; • a discussion of the teaching of practical ethics. Michael Davis explores...

At first it may seem odd to find a book about ethics in forensic science
included in a series entitled
Protocols in Forensic Science
. However, we find
it entirely appropriate because the generation of data and the use to which
that data is put fall under the general rubric of good professional practice.
In the introductory volume of this series,
Principles and Practice of Criminalistics:
The Profession of Forensic Science
, we provided a general introduction
to the topic of ethics and accountability. In
Ethics in Forensic Science:
Professional Standards for the Practice of Criminalistics
, Peter D. Barnett, a
pioneer in this facet of the forensic profession, expands on these ideas and
puts...

Evil is a reality in the world of international politics. Human affairs
are all too frequently marked by atrocities of the most heinous
nature, acts readily described as “evil” in international political
thought and rhetoric. In particular, in the last decade of the twentieth
century and early years of the twenty-first, the world witnessed a wave of
humanitarian atrocities noted for their grotesque nature and magnitude.

Applied Ethics is now acknowledged as a field of study in its own right.
Much of its recent development has resulted from rethinking traditional
medical ethics in the light of new moral problems arising out of advances
in medical science and technology. Applied philosophers, ethicists and
lawyers have devoted considerable energy to exploring the dilemmas
emerging from modern health care practices and their effects on the
practitioner–patient relationship.
