A BOOK interrupts one’s life. For better and worse, this text arises in academic
culture. The research began at St. Louis University, where my work
was supported by the Mellon Humanities Development Fund. Princeton
University supported me with generous leave time as the Richard Stockton
Bicentennial Preceptor. The book has been completed in the context of
the Philosophy Department at the University of Toronto, where my work
has received a warm reception. This book has benefited from all those
institutions....

In a nearby school three eighth graders are overheard rehearsing ‘today’s
problem with adults’:
‘What do they know about our kind of music anyway?’
‘Yeah! You’d think they never had sex ‘n’ stuff in their own lives, the way
they put down our music.’
‘They can’t stand having young people expressin’ their own feelings.
Like, we’re just supposed to be like them.’
‘Did you hear what Joey’s parents did! They took his whole CD
collection away from him. They go to one of those weird churches where
they preach against kids’ music.’...

The practice of journalism as a profession raises many ethical issues. We are more
concerned with the nature and possible resolution of the issues that arise in the practice
than with the theoretical definition of a profession. The nature of professionalism is both
vague and flexible, as older professions like law and medicine change, and newer
occupations jostle for the status that professionalism brings, occupations like teaching,
social work, nursing, and even journalism.

Nietzsche’s story ends as our narration begins. Wheelchair-bound, intermittently
lucid, he is, as before, tremulous and peremptory. Cavernous, his
eyes retain a rheumy dignity. The void into which he so long gazed would
now seem to gaze into him.

T his collection was not difficult to assemble. Within months of its publication,
Amy Gutmann and Dennis Thompson's Democracy and Disagreement
received a most unusual level of scholarly attention.
Symposia on the book were organized at a number of scholarly meetings,
including the annual conventions of the American Political Science Association,
the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics, and the Pacific
Division of the American Philosophical Association. An impressive roster of
leading scholars in political theory and ethics confronted the arguments of

The discourses and institutions of human rights are contemporary devices for
bringing morality to bear on the harsh realities of political, economic and social life.
These attempts to render the conditions of human existence more tolerable and more
dignified tend to focus mainly on the role of domestic and international law and the
conduct of states and the international institutions that represent them. This is an
entirely proper and necessary part of any serious attempt to promote and protect
human rights and one that has the full moral endorsement of those who are
committed to the cause of human rights....

Ethical professional practice is the hallmark of effective educational
leadership. To be an exemplary educational leader it is imperative to have
a deeply developed and integrated level of ethical knowledge and awareness.
This essential form of professional knowledge enables educational
leaders to respond to the complex and multi-faceted ethical dimensions
inherent in the challenges, tensions, issues and dilemmas that are consistently
encountered in professional practice.

This collection of original essays addresses some of the important
problems ,,'e have come to group under the short name AIDS. It
differs from most works on AIDS in two related ways. First, its focus is
on the moral choices of individual practitioners rather than no empirical
research or social policy. Second, the practitioners whose problems
are discusst~d include-besides the more usual physicians and nursesdentists,
counselors, preschool teachers, business managers, college
administrators, lawyers, clergy, journalists, and politicians. This is a
contribution to the literature on professions as well as to the literature
on AIDS....

This book has been a long time in the making, and the debts I have incurred
crossmany borders. FromStanford, Iwant to thankDavidRiggs, Paul Seaver,

is to StephenOrgel, who nurtured the kind of structured free thinkingwithout
which an interdisciplinary project like this one could not have begun to taken
shape.More recently, Stephen has been an enthusiastic reader of newchapters
and stronger versions of old chapters, an inspired mentor and even better
friend. From deeper in my past, I am grateful to three teachers in Edmonton
who first introduced me to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: Leila

Freedom Bound is about the origins of modern America – a history of colon-
izing, work, and civic identity from the beginnings of English presence on
the mainland until the Civil War. It is a history of migrants and migrations,
of colonizers and colonized, of households and servitude and slavery, and
of the freedom all craved and some found. Above all, it is a history of the
law that framed the entire process. Freedom Bound tells how colonies were
planted in occupied territories, how they were populated with migrants –
free and unfree...

K. P. Schmidt, C. E. Shaw, and R. C. Stebbins was chaired by Conant and the
resulting publication summarized their philosophy, methods, and the names

The Devil's Dictionary_ was begun in a weekly paper
in 1881, and was continued in a desultory way at long
intervals until 1906. In that year a large part of it
was published in covers with the title _The Cynic's Word
Book_, a name which the author had not the power to
reject or happiness to approve. To quote the publishers
of the present work:

The desire to write poetry, or at least acceptable verse, is almost uni-
versal. The achievement of this desire may be gained by anyone,
without excessive effort. Almost everyone, at some stage of his or her
life, has yielded to the seductive siren, and has done his or her best to
write poetry. An adequate craftbook on versification is a necessity,
when the urge becomes unconquerable.

The continuous reduction in size of a solid finally leads to a situation where the
original solid state properties can be only partially observed or may be even com-
pletely lost, as these properties are exclusively the result of the cooperation
between an infinite number of building blocks. Further reduction of size finally
leads to typical molecular behavior. On the other hand, even here are structural
relations to the bulk occasionally detectable....

‘Artists have given to certain matters employed in the arts
denominations which are more calculated to embarrass than to
encourage amateurs … this is a real abuse of words, which habit
preserves among our workmen, and which ought to be banished if
we are desirous of rendering the language of the arts intelligible.’

What is a “quotation”? It is a saying or piece of writing that strikes people as so true or
memorable that they quote it (or allude to it) in speech or writing. Often they will quote it
directly, introducing it with a phrase like “As——says” but equally often they will assume that
the reader or listener already knows the quotation, and they will simply allude to it without
mentioning its source (as in the headline “A rosè is a rosè is a rosè,” referring obliquely to a line
by Gertrude Stein)....

The basic question of the longer work that volume one introduces is a
deceptively simple one: What sorts of conduct may the state rightly make
criminal? Philosophers have attempted to answer this question by proposing
what I call liberty-limiting principles (or equivalently, coercion-legitimizing
principles) which state that a given type of consideration is always a
morally relevant reason in support of penal legislation even if other reasons
may in the circumstances outweigh it.

Passing annoyance, disappointment, disgust, embarrassment, and various
other disliked conditions such as fear, anxiety, and minor (harmless) aches
and pains, are not in themselves necessarily harmful. Consequently, no matter
how the harm principle is mediated, it will not certify as legitimate those
interferences with the liberty of some citizens that are made for the sole
purpose of preventing such unpleasant states in others.

and complement the standards developed so far for definitions and statistical
registration in four fields, in order to contribute to the picture of criminal justice

television (ITV) in Britain. It was continued by Thames Television,
which took over the commercial franchise for London weekdays
in 1968. For eight years, from 1978 to 1986, Thames’s main
current affairs series became TVEye. The name This Week was
reinstated in 1986 and the series finally closed when Thames lost
its franchise in December 1992. For ease of reference, in this book

The magnetosphere is an open system that interacts with the solar wind. In this system, solar wind energy continuously permeates different regions of the magnetosphere through electromagnetic processes, which we can well describe in terms of current systems. In fact, our ability to use various methods to study magnetospheric current systems has recently prompted significant progress in our understanding of the phenomenon.
