Mechanics of Internal Waves Propagating over a Varying Bottom Slope
We studied theoretically and experimentally the transformation, attenuation, and setup due to shoaling and breaking of internal waves in a two-layer fluid system on a uniform slope. An image processing technique was used to illustrate 2D instantaneous displacements of density interface. These results were compared with the calculated values by using the method of characteristics, the simple shoaling model with energy dissipation, and the momentum balance equation based on a radiation stress concept.

Tsunani risk along Vietnamese coast
Results of the analysis of field survey data and historic literature documents in Vietnam reveal that there is evident of past tsunami attacking Vietnamese coast. However, the evident is still not strong enough to confirm the occurrence of past tsunami events in Vietnam. On the other hand, results of preliminary paleotsunami study also show that there are possibilities of tsunami occurrence at Vietnam coast in the past.

Model for water circulation in tidal dominated estuarine regions
The litho-hydrodynamic and environmental conditions in the Vietnamese coastal estuarine basin are significantly affected by the land-ocean-atmosphere interaction processes whish tide has a determining role. Application of the coupled 1D, 2D and 3D modeling system could resolve this complicated problem but it requires other solutions related with the boundary and coupling conditions.

Storm surge predictions for Vietnam coast by Delft3D model using results from RAMS model
Storm surges are dangerous phenomena to the Vietnam coast, so they are taken in account by number of researchers. Rapid and accurate prediction of storm surges makes contribution in protection and mitigation of natural damages in coastal areas. Storm surges are considered as a complicated processes under action of air pressure, wind field, tide etc. and they may be well predicted using mathematical models.

Computation of storm and monsoon wave parameters for sea dyke design in Vietnam
For the coastal zones of Vietnam, the storm and monsoon waves are considered as the maximum waves for the designed of the marine constructions as sea dyke and other constructions in the coast and in the marine areas. The most challenges are to choose the appropriate storm wave model, to formulate the wind input data set and especially to find the wave data in such utmost dangerous sea state for model validation and for analyzing the forecast results.

A method for locating possible sources of oil pollution in the East Vietnam Sea
A method was proposed for locating possible sources of oil pollution in the East Vietnam Sea. The method includes two stages. The first stage is called the raw stage. In this stage, based on the history of oil pollution at the Vietnamese coast and oil pollution footprint detected byremote sensing technique, numerical computation of wind and flow field in the sea was carried out.

The equilibrium stages of headland-bay beaches in the coastal provinces of Vietnam
The study presents the application of parabolic model using MEPBAY package to estimate the equilibrium stages of the headland-bay beaches in Binh Thuan and Ninh Thuan provinces. The model results showed that the present shorelines in Phan Thiet, Binh Thuan are not under equilibrium stages. As for Binh Thuan, the shoreline changes with and without structures in Phan Thiet and Hon Rom beaches were predicte.

Hydrodynamics and morphodynamics of a seasonally forced tidal inlet system
Hydrodynamics and morphodynamics of a seasonally forced tidal inlet system are investigated using numerical models. The ocean forcing including tidal and wave actions and sediment transport is simulated using Delft3D model. Fluvial processes in Delft3D are taken into account as results from SOBEKRURAL model.

Modelling bed level change at Nhat Le estuary and structural impacts using Delft3D
In recent years, Nhat Le estuary has been accreted due to the development of a spit bar in the south bank, which obstructs the waterway navigation, the flood drainage and causes erosion in the north bank endangering the infrastructures of Dong Hoi city. This study shows the simulation of short-term and long term bed level changes in 10, 50 and 100 years of the estuary and the impacts of applied structural solutions using Delft3D, a model developed by Delft Hydraulics.

Evaluation estuarine and coastal bathymetry changes of Cua Viet using Digital Elevation Model
Cua Viet is the Thach Han river’s mouth. It is quite big estuary that is located in the central coastal province of Quang Tri. In which, Cua Viet port plays an important role for water transport and commerce of the province. In recent years, accretion and erosion have occurred increasingly in term of scale and intensity. In addition, estuarine access channels suffer severely from sedimentation.

Using open source software to simulate estuarine hydrodynamics
The use of open source softwares helps users learn the internal structure of numerical models. However, open source softwares usually require linking to auxiliary programs for data preprocessing, postprocessing, and visualization. The users also have to understand the problem thoroughly, and may at times modify the source code so that the model could better represent the natural mechanisms.

Modelling sea dike toe erosion during storms
Toe erosion, especially in stormy conditions, is one of the common mechanism causing the failure and instability of the sea dikes and revetments. The erosion intensity becomes more serious at the beaches which is under the impacts of typhoons. Reliable forecasts about the intensity of toe erosion of sea dikes in stormy conditions have important ecnomomic and technical meaning in the design and construction of sea dikes.
