It is important that students are given some activities for revising the
multi-word verbs they learn in the book. The Drills section can be used,
and a simple revision activity is for students in pairs to test each other
using the definitions in Checking understanding.

Some multi-word verbs
and idioms can be used in a Find someone who... activity as a warmer at
the start of a lesson. Pairs of students can devise clues for a multi-word
verb crossword which can then be used to test other students. Students
can be asked to act out some of the dialogues on tape, and their spoken
and written errors with multi-word verbs can be used in a Grammar
Auction game.

Multi-word verbs, or phrasal verbs as they are
often referred to, present a very special problem. English can make verb
and particle (preposition or adverb) combinations easily and freely. The
word particle has been used throughout this book, in order to avoid
having to make the adverb/preposition distinction (to most students, the
word after the verb in a multi-word verb is always a preposition).

language schools and employers. Anyone who wants

The Key Vocabulary and Function Words and Phrases sections both have two photos on each right-hand
page. Each photo represents one vocabulary word. The teacher script is located on the back of each
card directly behind its accompanying photo. The Basic Words section shows six photos per page,
followed by a teacher routine. The ELD Content Words section mimics this format with 4 to 6 words per
page.

A course in spoken English may be either in the form of 'what to say', or in the form of 'how to say*. The former is usually focussed on English conversation, and the latter on English pronunciation. The former aims to teach how to express communicative functions, such as asking questions, making requests, getting things done, or expressing greetings, farewells, apologies, regrets, thanks, etc.

The use of literature in foreign language teaching has greatly increased over the past few years. The materials and activities that derive from literary texts are a great aidto learning in that they appeal to the learners’ imagination, increase motivation and, above all, create a rich and meaningful context. Among the techniques available tothe teacher, storytelling is one of the most frequently used, especially with beginnersand false beginners. Storytelling is an established part of the curriculum in both English speaking countries and many others, and stories are seen as a first-rateresource in the teaching of the child’s own language.

This book has been written to help teachers develop an understanding
of those aspects of English that are especially relevant when teaching
learners who speak other languages. It provides an overview of the forms,
structures and functions that frequently occur in English and need to be
known by learners. The word ‘grammar’ is used here to describe not only
how words and sentences fit together, but also how English is structured
at other levels of the language, including sounds, vocabulary and texts....

The Ministry would like to acknowledge the many educators who have contributed
over time to the creation of the following (published and unpublished) documents.
These served as points of reference and as sources of information for the ESL
specialists who helped develop this resource. In some instances, material from these
documents has been adapted for inclusion in the present publication.

We present C*ST*RD, a cross-language information delivery system that supports cross-language
information retrieval, information space visualization and navigation, machine translation, and
text summarization of single documents and clusters of documents. C*ST*RD was assembled
and trained within one month, in the context of DARPA's Surprise Language Exercise, that
selected as source a heretofore unstudied language, Hindi. Given the brief time, we could not
create deep Hindi capabilities for all the modules, but instead experimented with combining....

In the long term, the earth must shed energy into space at the same rate at
which it absorbs energy from the sun. Solar energy arrives in the form of shortwavelength
radiation. Some of this radiation is reflected away by the earth's
surface and atmosphere. Most of it, however, passes straight through the
atmosphere to warm the earth's surface. The earth gets rid of this energy
(sends it back out into space) in the form of long wavelength, infra-red
radiation.

Students for whom English is a second or additional language (or dialect) are a
growing segment of British ColumbiaÕs K-12 school population. Over the
past ten years, the number of students identified as needing ESL services in BC
has more than tripled. Lower Mainland school districts have been especially affected,
and educators in those districts have had to develop skills and processes to address the
growing need. With continuing growth in the numbers of ESL students provincewide,
however, the need to provide appropriate ESL services is becoming an issue for districts
in all areas of BC. ...

The diversity that exists in Ontario’s classrooms has helped to shape
the policy outlined in this document, which is intended to promote good
outcomes for English language learners. These students need to learn the
language of instruction in English language schools at the same time as they
are working towards meeting the curriculum expectations. Implementation
of this policy will promote academic achievement among English language
learners at the level expected of all learners in Ontario. It will also support
successful outcomes for English language learners as they graduate from
school and move to the next stage of living and learning....

Whether any farmers, foresters, doctors, or nutritionists were specifically informed of
these studies is not known. Apparently no one at USDA’s Beltsville headquarters became
very excited over the value of the rock dust for soil building and nutritional uplift, as another
more recent article on cement dust in Science (Maugh, 1978) indicates.

As may be obvious by now, it is helpful in the understanding of this book to see the earth
as having a single soil (as it has a single atmosphere), nearly all of it 10,000 or more years
“old,” or in development, since the bulk of its surface “parent material” was laid down. In addition to those cited by Hamaker, some other examples of results obtained with
ground gravel (mixed rock) materials may help illustrate the great potential to restore
youthfulness and productive fertility to any and all soil....

No vocabulary book can possibly contain all of the words and expressions that you are likely
to come across in the TOEIC®, so it is important that you acquire new vocabulary from other
sources. Try to read as much as possible from a different variety of authentic reading
materials (books, newspapers, journals, magazines, etc.), and familiarize yourself with
spoken English by listening to English-language radio stations and watching English-
language movies and television programs whenever possible....
