Stability, Riemann Surfaces, Conformal Mappings Complex Functions Theory a-3

Leif Mejlbro was educated as a mathematician at the University of Copenhagen, where he wrote his thesis on Linear Partial Differential Operators and Distributions. Shortly after he obtained a position at the Technical University of Denmark, where he remained until his retirement in 2003. He has twice been on leave, first time one year at the Swedish Academy, Stockholm, and second time at the Copenhagen Telephone Company, now part of the Danish Telecommunication Company, in both places doing research....

Prolog Techniques

Prolog is considered difficult by students. Usually, by the time they learn Prolog, which is most likely to happen in preparation for a course in Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Expert Systems, they will have studied imperative programming and/or the object oriented paradigm. Unfortunately, this prior experience is not always conducive to learning Prolog. Even though there is a good provision of traditional Prolog textbooks (for example [2]), students still find it hard to write solutions in Prolog to problems of any notable complexity. In my experience this holds also (and in particular) for problems for which Prolog should be the natural choice....

Understanding Computer Simulation

Computer simulation is used to reduce the risk associated with creating new systems or with making changes to existing ones. More than ever, modern organizations want assurance that investments will produce the expected results. For instance, an assembly line may be required to produce a particular number of autos during an eight hour shift. Complex, interacting factors influence operation and so powerful tools are needed to develop an accurate analysis. Over the past few decades, computer simulation software, together with statistical analysis techniques have evolved to give decision makers tools equal to the task. As the world grows more technical and the need for precision becomes...

Maven project automation for dummies

Continuous integration is the practice where the work of all the developers are integrated, analyzed and verified on a regular basis, preferably multiple times a day. It takes the latest situation from the source control system, performs unit tests, makes a build, deploys the application, performs integration tests and creates reports about these steps and communicates them with the team, all automatically without human interaction.

A Study In Scarlet

A Study in Scarlet was Sherlock Holmes' first outing into the literary world. Published in 1887 (after many rejections) it was an immediate success. Conan Doyle's quirky hero, with his cold deductive mind, violin playing and cocaine addiction, fascinated the reading public, and laid the foundation for the many Sherlock Holmes books and short stories that were to follow over the next three decades. In this first work, all the winning ingredient of a Holmes novel appear fully-formed: a murder, puzzling clues, evil villains, startling locations and an elegant, surprising solution provided in typical laconic style by the arch-sleuth himself....

Fundamentals of Hydrogen Safety Engineering II

There are two types of “combustion explosions”, i.e. deflagrations and detonations. There are other types of “explosions”, e.g. “physical explosions” of vessels by overpressure above the established limit due to overfill, as a result of runaway reaction, etc. The word “explosion” is rather a jargon and we will avoid applying it in this book where possible. Sometimes the use of term “explosion” could generate misunderstanding. For example, some standards do introduce wrongly from author’s point of view so-called “explosion limit”. This is done in spite of the fact that there can be a significant different between the “flammability limit”, which is relevant for deflagrations, and “detonability...

Hilbert Spaces and Operators on Hilbert Spaces

Hilbert Spaces 1.1 Inner product spaces Example 1.1 Prove that in a real vector space with inner product we have (x, y) = 1 4 x + y2 − x − y2, and in a complex vector space with inner product we have (x, y) = 1 4 x + y2 − x − y2 + i x + iy2 + i x − iy2. These are the so-called polarization identities. They tell us that in a Hilbert space, the inner product is determined by the norm.

Integration and differential equations

These two texts in this one cover, entitled ‘An introduction to the standard methods of elementary integration’ (Part I) and ‘The integration of ordinary differential equations’ (Part II), are two of the ‘Notebook’ series available as additional and background reading to students at Newcastle University (UK). This pair constitutes a basic introduction to both the elementary methods of integration, and also the application of some of these techniques to the solution of standard ordinary differential equations. Thus the first is a natural precursor to the second, but each could be read independently....

Introduction to Digital Signal and System Analysis

Since the 1990s, digital signals have been increasingly used not only in various industries and engineering equipments but also in everybody’s daily necessities. Mobile phones, TV receivers, music CDs, multimedia computing, etc, are the indispensable items in modern life, in which digital formats are taken as a basic form for carrying and storing information. The major reason for the advancement in the use of digital signals is the big leap forward in the popularization of microelectronics and computing technology in the past three decades. Traditional analogue broadcast is being widely upgraded to digital. A general shift from analogue to digital systems has taken place and...

Introduction to Polymer Science and Technology

Learning involves acquiring knowledge, which is encouraged in all traditions. For example, the Quran urges people to seek knowledge and to use it for the well being of society: “My Lord, increase me in knowledge”, Al-Quran 20:114. Knowledge should be applied in a safe, responsible and ethical manner not only to benefi t us personally but also to improve the lot of the people we live with. It is also a duty to ensure that our surrounding habitat is not endangered. Th is sometimes requires knowledge of the local culture to help achieve a desirable outcome. Martin Palmer’s presentation on BBC Th ought for the Day...

Basic Concepts in Turbomachinery

This book is based on an introductory turbomachinery course at Durham University. This course was taught by Dr David Gregory-Smith and Professor Li He over a number of years and I am extremely grateful to them for providing a clear and lucid set of principles on which to base this work. My current colleagues at Durham Dr Rob Dominy and Dr David Sims-Williams have also provided invaluable help (even if they didn’t realise it!) in preparing this work.

Maximising Your Potential Be all you can be!

Each of us is unique. Like snowflakes that look the same but under the microscope are different, we each have our own specialness that nobody else possesses. We have our own physical attributes, our own mental make-up, our own environmental background, and our own cultural inheritance. But more than all these, we have our own special, unique, and un-copiable talents. These talents are our gifts for life on earth. Some of us search in vain for their own special talents and never realize them fully before they die. Others come to them late in life after journeys that take them...

Micro- and Nano-Transport of Biomolecules

The micro- and nano- transport of biomolecules is of interest to a wide range of scientific and engineering communities. Application areas include miniaturized technology that will support and advance key sectors, including healthcare, food provisioning, environment services, etc. This ebook is generally intended for undergraduate students from chemical, life and physical sciences wanting to find out about the basic properties of biomolecules and how they can be transported in liquids on the micro- to nano-scale. The e-book tends to be oriented towards engineering aspects, especially with the transport of biomolecules in micro-devices powered electrically. It is hoped it will also be useful for interdisciplinary researchers surveying the...

Nanotechnology

Welcome to this Study Guide to nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is widely considered to constitute the basis of the next technological revolution, following on from the first Industrial Revolution, which began around 1750 with the introduction of the steam engine and steelmaking (and which parallelled, or perhaps caused, upheavals in land ownership and agriculture practice). The Industrial Revolution constituted as profound a change in society and civilization as the earlier Stone, Bronze and Iron revolutions, each of which ushered in a distinctly new age in the history of human civilization....
