ELECTRIC TOOLS
1.
Needle-nose pliers or long-nose
pliers are both cutting and
holding pliers used by electricians to
bend and snip wires. Because of their
long shape they are useful for reaching
into small areas where cables or other
materials have become unreachable
with fingers or other means.
5
- 2. There are two basic types of
screwdrivers: standard, or slot
screwdrivers and Phillips
screwdrivers. The difference
between a standard screwdriver and
a Phillips screwdriver is the shape
of the head. You use Phillips
screwdrivers with Phillips screws,
and standard screwdrivers with
standard screws.
2. Wire strippers are a small, hand-
held device used to strip the electrical
insulation from electric wires. Wire
strippers include a pair of opposing
blades much like scissors or wire
cutters. The addition of a center notch
makes it easier to cut the insulation
without cutting the wire. This type of
wire stripper is used by rotating it
around the insulation while applying
pressure in order to make a cut around
the insulation. Since the insulation is
not bonded to the wire, it then pulls
easily off the end.
4. Cable shears are ideal for
cutting copper and aluminum
cables, including both single and
multiple wires. The hardened
blades provide an easy, clean,
precise cut without damaging or
deforming the cable.
5. Insulating tape is used
to insulate electrical wires and other
materials that conduct electricity. It
can be made of many plastics, but
vinyl is most popular, as it stretches
well and gives an effective and long
lasting insulation.
6. All electricians need a high
quality drill. Along with it, they
need lots of drill bits. The
Electrician Drill Bit Kit has
everything you need. It contains
several spade bits. These bits are
6
- perfect for most jobs. For other
jobs, the kit has auger bits, hole
saw bits and wood augers

Nội dung
If we connect a battery across a body, there is a movement of free
electrons towards the positive end. This movement of electrons is an electric
current. All materials can be classified into three groups according to how
easily they permit an electric current to flow. These are conductors, insulators
and semiconductors.
In the first category are substances which provide an easy path for an
electric current. All metals are conductors; however some metals do not conduct
well. Manganin, for example, is a poor conductor. Copper is a good conductor,
therefore it is widely used for cables. A non-metal which conducts well is
carbon. Salt water is an example of a liquid conductor.
A material which does not easily release electron is called an insulator.
Rubber, nylon, porcelain and air are all insulators. There are no perfect
insulators. All insulators will allow some flow of electrons; however this can
usually be ignored because the flow they permit so small.
Semiconductors are midway between conductors and insulators. Under
certain conditions they allow a current to flow easily but under others they
behave as insulators. Germanium and silicon are semiconductors. Mixtures of
certain metallic oxides also act as semiconductors. These are known as
11
- thermistors. The resistance of thermistors falls rapidly as they temperature rises.
They are therefore used in temperature - sensing devices
The resistance of metals varies with their temperature. When they get hot,
their resistance increases. When they are cool, their resistance falls. The
resistance of some metals and alloys steadily decreases as their temperature is
lowered, then falls suddenly to a negligible value at temperatures a few degrees
above absolute zero (- 273°C). In other words, these materials have almost no
resistance to an electric current at very low temperatures. They become almost
perfect conductors. This is called superconductivity. It occurs only with certain
materials, for example lead, and only at very low temperatures.

Nội dung
MEASURING INSTRUMENTS
A voltmeter is an instrument for
measuring the voltage between two points
in an electric circuit. In analogy with a
water circuit, a voltmeter is like a meter
designed to measure pressure difference.
Since one is interested in measuring the
voltage between two points in a circuit, a
voltmeter must be connected in parallel
with the portion of the circuit on which
the measurement is made.
The figure shows a voltmeter
connected in parallel with a battery. One
lead of the voltmeter is connected to one
end of the battery and the other lead is
16
- connected to the opposite end. The
voltmeter may also be used to measure
the voltage across a resistor or any other
component of a circuit that has a voltage
drop.
An ammeter measures current flow in a
circuit. Current is measured in amperes.
Unlike the voltmeter and ohmmeter, the
ammeter must be placed into the circuit or
in series with the circuit being tested.
Normally, this requires disconnecting a
wire or connector from a component and
connecting the ammeter between the wire
or connector and the component. The red
lead of the ammeter should always be
connected to the side of the connector
closest to the positive side of the battery
and the black lead should be connected to
the other side.
An ohmmeter is an instrument for
measuring electrical resistance. The basic
ohmmeter can function much like an
ammeter.
The ohmmeter works by supplying
a constant voltage to the resistor and
measuring the current flowing through it.
The measured current is then converted
into a corresponding resistance reading
through Ohm‟s Law. Ohmmeters only
function correctly when measuring
resistance that is not being powered by a
voltage or current source. In other words,
you cannot measure the resistance of a
component that is already connected to a
circuit. This is because the ohmmeter‟s
accurate indication depends only on its
own source of voltage.
A multimeter is a must for diagnosing the
individual components of an electrical
system. Multimeters have different names,
depending on what they measure and how
they function. A volt-ohm-milliamp meter
is referred to as a VOM or DVOM, if it is
digital. A digital multimeter can measure
many more things than volts, ohms, and
low current. Most multimeters measure
direct current (dc) and alternating current
17
- (ac) amperes, volts, and ohms. More
advanced multimeters may also measure
diode continuity, frequency, temperature,
or engine speed.
