  1. Hanoi Open University Faculty of Tourism *** WORLD WONDER ASSIGNMENT *** Subject: The leaning tower of Pisa Student: Nguyễn Bảo Ngọc Nguyễn Thị Ngân Class: A1_K16
  2. INTRODUCTION : Many lists of wonders of the world are said to have existed during the Middle Ages, although it is unlikely that these lists originated at that time because the word medieval was not even invented until the Enlightenment- era, and the concept of a Middle Age did not become popular until the 16th century. Brewer's refers to them as "later lists" suggesting the lists were created after the Middle Ages. Many of the structures on these lists were built much earlier than the Medieval Ages, but were well known. These lists go by names such as Wonders of the Middle Ages (implying no specific limitation to seven), Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages, Medieval Mind and Architectural Wonders of the Middle Ages. Typically representative of the seven greatest wonder of the Medieval Mind are: Stonehenge, the Colosseum, the Catacombs of Kom el Soqafa, the Great Wall of China, the porcelain tower of Nanjing, the Hagia Sophia and The leaning tower of Pisa. When a person thinks of Italy’s medieval architectures, two images come to mind. One is The Colosseum and the other is The leaning tower of Pisa. Any visit to Italy would not be complete without a trip to see The leaning tower that is one of symbols of Italy. The Leaning Tower of Pisa or simply The Tower of Pisa is the campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa. It is situated behind the cathedral and is the third oldest structure in Pisa's Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral
  3. Square) after the cathedral and the baptistery. By this assignment, we’ll show you all the things we know about this World Wonder.
  4. 1. BODY 2.1. Italy, where the leaning tower of Pisa is located: Let’s take a look at Italy, the country where the Wonder located. Italy is located on the Italian Peninsula in Southern Europe. This country is subdivided into 20 regions. Five of these regions have a special autonomous status that enables them to enact legislation on some of their local matters. In October 2007, the Italian population surpassed 59.7 million. Italy currently has the 23rd largest population worldwide. Italy is one of the most popular destinations on the tourist trail, known for its exquisite fashion, historical buildings and its fabulous food. 2.2. The leaning tower of Pisa: Come back to our Wonder. The Tower of Pisa is the bell tower of the Cathedral. Its construction began in the August of 1173 and continued (with two long interruptions) for about two hundred years, in full fidelity to the original project. The tower began to sink after construction progressed to the third floor in 1178. This was due to a mere three-meter foundation, set in weak, unstable subsoil. This means the design was flawed from the beginning. Construction was subsequently halted for almost a century, because the Pisans were almost continually engaged in battles with Genoa, Lucca and Florence. This allowed time for the underlying soil to settle. Otherwise, the tower would almost certainly have toppled. In 1198, clocks were temporarily installed on the third floor of the unfinished construction. In 1272, construction resumed under Giovanni di Simone, architect of the Camposanto. In an effort to compensate for the tilt, the engineers built higher floors with one side taller than the other. This made the tower begin to lean in the other direction. Because of this, the tower is actually curved. Construction was halted again in 1284, when the Pisans were defeated by the Genoans in the Battle of Meloria. The seventh floor was completed in 1319. The bell-chamber was not finally added until 1372. It was built by
  5. Tommaso di Andrea Pisano, who succeeded in harmonizing the Gothic elements of the bell-chamber with the Romanesque style of the tower. The Tower of Pisa was built to show the rest of the world the wealth of the city of Pisa. The people of Pisa were very good sailors and they conquered many lands, including Jerusalem, Carthago, Ibiza, Mallorca, Africa, Belgium, Britania, Norway, Spain, Morocco, and other places. But they had only one real enemy, the people from Florence. And to show how well they were doing they started to build a really useless bell-tower to go with the rest of the buildings near it - the Cathedral, Baptistery, and Cemetery. There has been controversy about the real identity of the architect of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. For many years, the design was attributed to Guglielmo and Bonanno Pisano , a well-known 12th century resident artist of Pisa, famous for his bronze casting, particularly in the Pisa Duomo. Bonanno Pisano left Pisa in 1185 for Monreale, Sicily, only to come back and die in his home town. His sarcophagus was discovered at the foot of the tower in 1820. However recent studies seem to indicate Diotisalvi as the original architect due to the time of construction and affinity with other Diotisalvi works, notably the bell tower of San Nicola (Pisa) and the Baptistery in Pisa. However, he usually signed his works and there is no signature by him in the bell tower which leads to further speculation. 2.3. Stories associated with The leaning tower of Pisa Galileo Galilei is said to have dropped two cannon balls of different masses from the tower to demonstrate that their speed of descent was independent of their mass. This is considered an apocryphal tale, and the only source for it comes from Galileo's secretary. During World War II, the Allies discovered that the Nazis were using it as an observation post. A U.S. Army sergeant was briefly entrusted with the fate of the tower and his decision not to call in an artillery strike saved the tower from destruction. 2.4. The leaning tower of Pisa tourism:
  6. Pisa attracts bus after bus of tourists every day of the year to see its most famous attraction. The Leaning Tower of Pisa has become an Italian symbol, much like Pizza and Pavarotti! The city has put a lot of effort into the tower and it is again safe to visit. Both because of its inclination, and its beauty, from 1173 up to the present the Tower has been the object of very special attention. The quantity of tourists visit every year can show that how it is fascinating. There are seven bells, one for each note of the musical scale. when the tourists come here. They can see the tower both from outside both from inside. By the way, they‘ll watch all of the bell-chamber of the leaning tower, then they can see all the square which is called Piazza de Miracoli (Square of Miracles). The square, besides the tower, is composed by the Baptistery, the Cathedral (Duomo) and the Cemetery (Camposanto). It is called Square of Miracles because in such a small place there are 4 magnificent monuments. Tourists can see the whole square for free but if they want to enter in the monuments they have to pay a ticket, except for the Cathedral which is still the main church of Pisa. Bookings are essential and only 30 people can go up per half hour so make your booking and be on time! Pisa can be hot and crowded in summer, especially in the area around the cathedral and tower. Many of the tourists come for the day only so if you're visiting in high season, you might want to spend the night and enjoy the sites in the morning or evening. Spring and fall are the most pleasant times to visit Pisa.
  7. 2. CONCLUSION: Many people may be surprised to hear that the tilt is actually intentional, after architects concluded that the stories of the accidental tilt were most probably just that stories. Accidental or not, the fact remains that it is one of the most beautiful, unique buildings in the world, a view shared by the Italian government who spent $80 million on restoration in the early nineties.
