Hello everyone! As you all know, Tet celebration in Vietnam starts on the 1st day of Lunar calendar and usually lasts for 3 days. The work time are normally back to track at January 5th (fifth) of Lunar Calendar. Tet in HCM city is mostly the same as many other cities in Vietnam. Of course, it also different. So, What to do if you are in Ho Chi Minh City for Tet holiday? Today I’m going to talk to you about Tet in HCM city. My persentation will be in two parts. I’ll begin with some general information about Tourist Attractions in Tet. Then, I’m going to talk to you about the most typical food found in HCM city Tet holiday. Following are the most typical food found in SaiGon Tet holiday: ­ Firstly, Banh Chung/ Banh Tet (steamed square cake) Banh Chung and its Southern variety called Banh Tet ­ is unique to Vietnam`s Tet holiday. Banh Chung is a food made from glutinous rice, mung bean and pork, added with many other ingredients. Banh Chung is covered by green leaves (usually dong leaves, banana leaves). ­ Next, Mut – Candies fruits Like a snack to welcome guests in this special period. Mut is always kept in beautiful boxes and placed at the table in the living room, and it is the main food for the owners and guests to taste when they’re talking, enjoyed over a cup of tea. This once­in­year mix of snack is very large in variety, with so many tastes: ginger, carrot, coconut, pineapple, sweet potato.Unlike Western jam, which is usually in liquid form and served with bread, "Vietnamese jam" is mainly in dry form, usually dried fruits and some kind of seeds (pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, watermelon seeds). ­ Finally, Braised Pork and Eggs in Caramel Sauce Pork is cut into cubes and soak in garlic, fish sauce, salt, sugar and caramel. The egg are use in this food because it symbolizes the goodness and happiness. The pork and peeled hard­boiled eggs are cook in a pot for a few hours. Now we’ll move on to “Tourist Attractions” ­ Firstly, Watch Flower Displays: During Tet holidays, there are many places that you can visit and things to enjoy in Ho Chi Minh City. You can pay a visit to Nguyen Hue Flower Street in District 1. This is where a special event is held every year to celebrate Lunar New Year: Different kinds of flowers from many regions of the country are brought to Ho Chi Minh City and arranged into beautiful shapes. The theme is different each year based on the animal of the year according to Chinese Zodiac (2012 will be the year of Dragon and 2016 will be the year of Monkey). You can walk along Nguyen Hue street, have a look at those beautiful rare flowers and admire the skillful hands of the artist who make all of these things. ­ Secondly, Visit Cho Lon (District 5) As Tet comes to every house’s door, Cho Lon is most crowded and beautiful in a year, putting on a new red coat from street to street, shop to shop. Being the trade center of the city and the home for decoration materials, ChoLon is the first place to feel the atmosphere of Tet Holiday. ­ Thirdly, Visit pagodas The popular pagodas that most people usually visit during Tet holidays are Vinh Nghiem Pagoda, Hoang Phap Pagoda and Giac Lam Pagoda Here you can join the crowd of people praying for luck, happiness and joyfulness for themselves and their families in the upcoming year. On this occasion when pagodas are filled with flocks of pilgrims, tourists can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere mixed with charming and mysterious aroma of incense sticks (nhang).
