v2.0 For the latest version visit: www.stonebrew.com/rfp A MessAge FroM greg Koch Stone Brewing Co. has come a long way in its 15 years. Stone has grown from a small micro-brewery with just two founders into a large regional craft brewery employing 435 amazing men and women. Stone beers are now distributed in 36 states and four countries. From the beginning in 1996, our goal has been to brew outstanding, unique beers while maintaining an unwavering commitment to sustainability, business ethics, and the art of brewing. Over the last 15 years, Stone Brewing Co. has been the fastest growing brewery in the United States, averaging 45% annual increases in revenue and 43% annual increases in production of beer. That tremendous growth is strictly the result of word-of-mouth demand for our beers, as we have never advertised our beer in print or broadcast media. That’s cor-rect. Never. We have also never discounted our beer. This is quite unusual in the United States as advertising and discounting are two of the primary techniques brewers often use to drive the growth of their brands. But not Stone. We are also proud that over the years we have grown without compromising our commit-ment to business ethics. In an industry known for its vigorous—and at times unseemly— competition, we have embraced collaboration, integrity, and quality as the hallmarks of our business. Today, demand for Stone beer has grown around the world, as evidenced by international recognition of our brands. However, exporting our beer to distant markets has proven a challenging proposition: How do we maintain the freshness and cost-effectiveness of our beer, and the low-carbon footprint of our brewery, while reaching markets in Europe? We feel that the best solution to this challenge is to operate a brewery in Europe to satisfy European demand. This will allow us to deliver our beer at its freshest, and in the most sustainable way possible, while creating a hands-on opportunity to continue building a culture of craft beer connoisseurship. A Stone Brewing location in Europe will give European craft beer aficionados the opportu-nity to visit with our brewery and learn about the brewing process. Our San Diego brewery has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in our region, and we hope to be able to create a strong visitor connection with our European location. We pride ourselves on being an asset to our region; as such, our community and philan-thropic efforts far exceed what can be presented here. We believe that building a strong business means being a vital component of the economic, social, and environmental life of the community. We thank you for taking the time to learn about Stone Brewing Co. and considering our Request For Proposal. It is with tremendous enthusiasm and excitement that we await your response. In 2011, Stone was ranked as the 11th largest craft brewery in the United States. Stone brewed 176,000 hl (150,000 bbls) of beer in 2011. Stone seeks to meet growing international demand for Stone beers by owning and operating a brewery in Europe. There is demonstrated demand for Stone’s beers in the European market; however, exporting beer from Stone’s current brewery in San Diego creates issues of cost, freshness, and environmental impact. Stone welcomes a diverse range of proposals. Existing brewing facilities, redevel-opment sites, and other opportunities will be considered. Primary considerations will include cost eficiency/value, logistical appropriateness, uniqueness of the site, access to markets, and quality of life. This document will offer an introduction to Stone Brewing Co., including our beers, growth, culture, facilities, and mission. Our specific site requirements are attached. The deadline to submit proposals is 1 August, 2012. With this Request for Proposal, Stone Brewing Co. seeks to learn about potential opportunities for a European brewery and conduct evaluations of the most appropriate proposed sites.
