Research Background
Apartment construction boom in the 1980s / Sharp increase in aging apartments
Revised Korean building code : setting standards for building remodelling.
: specifying apartments older than fifteen years be remodelled. Most of Korean apartments have been built with fixed
patterns in size and layout.
Therefore,
A typological approach will be significant for researching them.
Extension is given priority in remodelling. - Apartments’ capital values are high in Korea.
- Up to 30% of the exclusive area is extendible.

Research Objectives
First, We discuss how fixed patterns are evident in Korean apartments,
and suggest an analytical frame for classifying them.
Then,we present the typical extension techniques applied to apartments in practice, classified by types of apartments and physical structures where extensions were applied.
Lastly, we discuss the problems and possible solutions for the currently implemented Korean apartment extensions.
