Ta không dùng „the‟ với : prison, hospital, university, school, college, church khi ta nghĩ về chức năng của chúng. So sánh các ví dụ sau để hiểu rõ: o Joe had an accident last week. He was taken to hospital. He‟s still in hospital now. (Joe đến bệnh viện vì là một bệnh nhân) o My father goes to church every Sunday (đến vì tôn giáo) o Jane has gone to the hospital to visit Joe. She‟s at the hospital now. (Jane đến bệnh viện như một người đến thăm chứ không là một bệnh nhân) o Some workmen went to the church to repair the roof.
