Who Was Pancho Villa?
• Born Doroteo Arango Arámbula July 5, 1878
• Son of a peon, allegedly killed a landowner who tried to rape his sister, fled to la sierra by the age of 16
• Cattle rustler and bandit until Madero’s revolution broke out in 1910 • Joins Madero’s forces, helps overthrow Díaz’s government
• Tensions rise with Huerta as Villa and Huerta crush Orozco’s rebellion against Madero
• Huerta attempts to execute Villa, Madero intervenes and Villa is sent to prison
• Huerta rebels against Madero; Villa rebels against Huerta as part of odd alliance with Carranza and Obregón (the Constitutionalists)
• Villa most successful of Constitutionalist generals, overruns northern Mexico and marches toward Mexico City (furious that supposed allies Carranza and Obregón try to slow his march)
• Occupies Mexico City along with Zapata before and during the Convention of Aguas Calientes
• Suffers worst military defeat at Celaya (1915) to Obregón, retreats north and becomes a regional power rather than a national player
• Raids Columbus, New Mexico (1916)
• Avoids General Pershing’s expedition, embarrassing both U.S. and Mexican governments
• Shot dead in his car in Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico July 20, 1923
