An educational divide reigns supreme in Bangladesh giving way to socio-economic inequality, reflecting
the nature of the statecraft, the contestations within the socio-economic fabric, and the level of exercise
of rights by the populace. Thus, the present anthology investigates into role of education in nation building
and linkages with knowledge and empowerment. Given the current socio-economic and political transition
in Bangladesh, such a publication of collections is timely and fundamental....

The GRE Subject Tests are designed to help graduate
school admission committees and fellowship sponsors
assess the qualifications of applicants in specific fields
of study. The tests also provide you with an assessment
of your own qualifications.
Scores on the tests are intended to indicate
knowledge of the subject matter emphasized in many
undergraduate programs as preparation for graduate
study. Because past achievement is usually a good
indicator of future performance, the scores are helpful
in predicting success in graduate study. Because the
tests are standardized, the test scores permit comparison
of students from different institutions with
different undergraduate programs. For some Subject
Tests, subscores are provided in addition to the total
score; these subscores...

Three other programmes come within the scope of this report: the Junior Certificate School programme
(JCSP), introduced in 1996; the Transition Year programme, introduced in 1984 and mainstreamed in
1994; and the Leaving Certificate Applied programme (LCA), introduced in 1995. Each is aimed at a
particular cohort of students and has specific objectives appropriate to these, but all share an emphasis
on the development of language skills, from the basic literacy of reading and writing to the critical
literacy required for analysing and interpreting texts....

I remember going shopping with my grandmother. She didn't bother to put her
shoes on. She went in her old slippers. The local grocer's was at the corner of the
street. There, she would meet three or four women and have a nice chat while waiting
for the grocer to serve them. They were never in a hurry and enjoyed the waiting time.

So far you have learnt how to record transactions in the accounting books by means of debit and
credit entries. At the end of each accounting period the figures in each account are examined in
order to summarise the situation they present. This will often, but not always, be a year if you
are calculating profit. It will be at least once a month if you want to see what is happening with
respect to particular accounts. Probably the most obvious reason for this is to find out how
much our customers owe us for goods we have sold to them. In most businesses this...

The ledger in which the impersonal accounts are kept is known as the Nominal (or ‘General’)
Ledger. In order to ensure privacy for the proprietor(s), the capital, drawings, and other similar
accounts are sometimes kept in a Private Ledger. This prevents office staff from seeing details of
items which the proprietors want to keep secret.

The impression is often given that all that an accountant does is produce figures arranged in various
ways. This has led to a perception that accountants are boring, pragmatic people with no
sense of humour. While it is true that such work does take up quite a lot of an accountant’s time,
it does not acount for all of a typical accountant’s work.

Accountants also need to be good communicators,
not just in the way they present accounting information on paper, but also in how
they verbally communicate the significance of the information they prepare.
An accountant can obviously arrange the financial figures so as to present the information in
as meaningful a way as possible for the people who are going to use that information.

It is an established fact in Translation Studies that if a dozen
translators tackle the same poem, they will produce a dozen
different versions. And yet somewhere in those dozen versions there
will be what Popovič calls the ‘invariant core’ of the original poem. This invariant core, he claims, is represented by stable, basic and
constant semantic elements in the text, whose existence can be
proved by experimental semantic condensation.

Whether the phrase is used mechanically, as part of the daily ritual,
whether it is used ironically, sadly or even cruelly is not specified. On
a stage, the actor and director would come to a decision about how
to interpret the phrase based on their concept of characterization and
of the overall meaning and structure of the play.

He thus opened a new stage of the debate on translation in English.
But although his theory is important for the linguist, it is
nevertheless restricted in that it implies a narrow theory of meaning.
Discussion of the key concepts of equivalence and cultural
untranslatability (see Section 1) has moved on a long way since his
book first appeared.

These cultural grids determine how reality is constructed in both
source and target texts, and the skill of the translator in manipulating
these grids will determine the success of the outcome. Lefevere
argues that these cultural grids, a notion deriving from Pierre
Bourdieu’s notion of cultural capital, highlight the creativity of the
translator, for he or she is inevitably engaged in a complex creative
process.

Whereas previously the emphasis had previously been on
comparing original and translation, often with a view to establishing
what had been ‘lost’ or ‘betrayed’ in the translation process, the new
approach took a resolutely different line, seeking not to evaluate but
to understand the shifts of emphasis that had taken place during the
transfer of texts from one literary system into another.

The apparent division between cultural and linguistic approaches
to translation that characterized much translation research until the
1980s is disappearing, partly because of shifts in linguistics that
have seen that discipline take a more overtly cultural turn, partly
because those who advocated an approach to translation rooted in
cultural history have become less defensive about their position.

In the circumstances, any subsequent, and surely final, effort can
only modestly look back, marvelling that the series is still here, and
not unreasonably congratulating itself on having provided an initial
outlet for what turned, over the years, into some of the distinctive
voices and topics in literary studies.

No university essay is like that. Even in universiry
examinations, where you may have to write about two pages in half an hour, you
are expected to have studied the subject in advance. The topics are of general interest and it makes no difference what subjects
candidates study. The issues raised are interesting, suitable for and easily
understood by candidates entering postgraduate or undergraduate studies.

say about the topic. If you are askedt o describe something, then your essayw ill mosdy presentf acts

IELTS Listening has four sections, each with 10 items (or questions). Each item is worth one mark.
The items are designed so that the answers appear in order in the listening passage. During the test,
time is given for candidates to read the questions and write down and check their answers. Answers
are written on the Question Paper as candidates listen. When the tape ends, ten minutes are
allowed for candidates to transfer their answers onto an Answer Sheet.

The aim always has been to make the reader more confident and
increasingly self-reliant.
This is a fast-track reference book. It is not a dictionary although,
like a dictionary, it is arranged alphabetically. It concentrates on
problem areas; it anticipates difficulties; it invites cross-references. By
exploring punctuation, for example, and paragraphing, it goes far
beyond a dictionary’s terms of reference. It is not intended to
replace a dictionary; it rather supplements it.

you understand what to do, then read through the text / questions first before attempting
the exercises. This is a useful 'skimming' technique that you should also use when you are
doing the TOEIC® itself.
