15 Vascular Resection for Hepatocellular Carcinoma 255 perform these resections. More importantly, such surgeons should understand the risks, benefits and limitations of these highly aggressive procedures and that they should be applied to a highly selected group of patients. An even smaller subset of patients with tumors involving major vasculature may be considered for resections utilizing cold preservations techniques. These extreme resections, performed by a handful of surgeons, offer the only hope for patients who would otherwise succumb to their liver cancers. The utility of these “extreme operations” must be carefully considered on a case-by-case basis. References 1. Llovet JM, Burroughs A, Bruix J (2003) Hepatocellular carcinoma.
