Khái niệm câu gián tiếp (hay câu trần thuật) là cách nói mà ta dùng để tường thuật
hay kể lại cho ai đó nghe những g ì người khác nói hoặc đang nói.
1. Trần thuật lại một câu nói trực tiếp
She said: “I have worked here for one year”
She said that she had worked there for one year
Trong cách trần thuật này thường dùng từ said (hoặc say) để viết lại câu. Chủ ngữ của
câu trực tiếp cần được chuyển đổi cho phù hợp với ý trần thuật.
Nếu trần thuật ở thời hiện tại đơn, tức là dùng “say” thì động từ của câu trực tiếp
không cần phải thay đổi
Nếu trần thuật ở thời quá khứ (đa số là trường hợp này), tức là dùng said thì động từ
trong câu trực tiếp cần lùi lại một thì, tức là:
Hiện tại => Quá khứ

Hiện tại tiếp diễn => Quá khứ tiếp diễn
-
Hiện tại hoàn thành => Quá khứ hoàn thành
-
Quá khứ => Quá khứ hoàn thành
-
Quá khứ tiếp diễn => Quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn
-
Tương lai gần => would + V
-
- Can => Could, may => might, shall => should
Và có một số từ cần thay đổi
- this => that
- these => those
- here => there
- tomorrow => the next day, the day after, the following day
- yesterday => the day before
Chú ý: Nếu câu trực tiếp diễn tả một chân lý, một điều hiển nhiên thì động từ không
cần thay đổi khi chuyển sang câu trần thuật

2. Trần thuật lại một câu nghi vấn
Vì là tường thuật lại một câu hỏi nên thường dùng các từ như asked (đa số), inquired,
wondered, wanted to know
Dung asked him: “Do you like swimming?”
Dung asked him if he liked swimming
Cách chuyển là thêm if vào phía trước câu nghi vấn rồi chuyển câu nghi vấn sang
dạng gián tiếp như chuyển một câu nói trực tiếp

(nếu mệnh lệnh phủ định thì thêm not vào phía sau somebody)
