Self-reported morbidities, nutritional characteristics, and associated factors in institutionalized and non-institutionalized older adults

As the world’s population ages and people live longer, it seems important to ensure that older people have a good quality of life and positive subjective well-being. The objective of this study is to determine socio-economic, health and nutritional characteristics of institutionalized and non-institutionalized elders in the province of Marrakech.

Patterns and predictive factors of loss of the independence trajectory among community-dwelling older adults

Independence is related to the aging process. Loss of independence is defined as the inability to make decisions and participate in activities of daily living (ADLs). Independence is related to physical, psychological, biological, and socioeconomic factors. An enhanced understanding of older people’s independence trajectories and associated risk factors would enable the develop early intervention strategies.

Secondary analysis of change in physical function after exercise intervention in older adults with hyperkyphosis and low physical function

Hyperkyphosis is common in older adults and associated with low physical function and reduced health related quality of life (HrQol). Improved kyphosis has been previously established in kyphosis-targeted interventions in randomized controlled trials in older adults with hyperkyphosis; however, evidence for improved physical function is conflicting.

Using augmented reality technology for balance training in the older adults: A feasibility pilot study

Impaired balance leading to falls is common in the older adults, and there is strong evidence that balance training reduces falls and increases independence. Reduced resources in health care will result in fewer people getting help with rehabilitation training. In this regard, the new technology augmented reality (AR) could be helpful.

An observational study protocol to explore loneliness and systemic inflammation in an older adult population with chronic venous leg ulcers

Chronic venous leg ulcers (CVLUs) are the most common type of lower extremity wound. Even when treated with evidenced-based care, 30–50% of CVLUs fail to heal. A specific gap exists about the association between psychosocial stressors, particularly loneliness, and biomarkers of inflammation and immunity.

Socio-demographic characteristics associated with emotional and social loneliness among older adults

International studies provide an overview of socio-demographic characteristics associated with loneliness among older adults, but few studies distinguished between emotional and social loneliness. This study examined socio-demographic characteristics associated with emotional and social loneliness.

Utilization of potentially inappropriate medication and risk of adverse drug events among older adults with chronic renal insufficiency: A population-wide cohort study

The use of potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) in population of older adults may result in adverse drug events (ADE) already after short term exposure, especially when it is prescribed to patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In order to limit ADE in the treatment of older adults PIM lists have been constructed as a source of information for healthcare professionals.

Associations between post-stroke motor and cognitive function: A cross-sectional study

Motor and cognitive impairments are frequently observed following stroke, but are often managed as distinct entities, and there is little evidence regarding how they are related. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of concurrent motor and cognitive impairments 3 months after stroke and to examine how motor performance was associated with memory, executive function and global cognition.

To be or not to be: Relationship between grandparent status and health and wellbeing

It is common for older people to become grandparents in later life. However, the impacts of grandparenting on their health and well-being remain ambiguous, especially in Chinese society, where the family is in the core of culture. The current study explored the relationship between grandparenthood and Chinese older people’s health and psychological well-being in Hong Kong.

Effects of foreign language learning on executive functions in healthy older adults: Study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

With age, most cognitive functions decline. As the number of people aged 60 years and older is expected to rise rapidly within the next decades, identifying interventions that promote healthy cognitive ageing is of utmost importance. Promising research on bilingualism has led to the notion that learning a foreign language could protect against cognitive decline.

Reliability and validity of an adapted hip abductor strength measure as a potential new fall risk assessment for older persons: A study protocol

Persons aged ≥ 65 years are currently the world’s fastest growing age group. An important complication of age is the increasing risk of falls. Falls have multifactorial etiology and modifiable risk factors open for interventions in prevention and rehabilitation, are of high interest.

Can dedicated emergency team and area for older people reduce the hospital admission rate? - An observational pre- and post-intervention study

Emergency department (ED) care of older patients is often complex. Geriatric ED guidelines can help to meet this challenge. However, training requirements, the use of time-consuming tools for comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA), a lack of golden standard to identify the frail patients, and the weak evidence of positive outcomes of using CGA in EDs pose barriers to introduce the guidelines.

A prospective cohort study of the risk factors for new falls and fragility fractures in self-caring elderly patients aged 80 years and over

This study aimed to prospectively analyze the risk factors for new falls and fragility fractures in selfcaring elderly patients and to find suitable evaluation tools for community screening and follow-up interventions. Methods: A total of 300 participants (187 male and 113 female), aged 80 or above and capable of caring for themselves, were enrolled in this study and observed for a period of 12 months.

Developing a sensor-based mobile application for in-home frailty assessment: A qualitative study

Frailty syndrome disproportionately affects older people, including 15% of non-nursing home population, and is known to be a strong predictor of poor health outcomes. There is a growing interest in incorporating frailty assessment into research and clinical practice, which may provide an opportunity to improve in home frailty assessment and improve doctor patient communication.

Experiences of supporting older persons in completion of an exercise and nutrition intervention: An interview study with nursing home staff

The interactions between nursing home (NH) staff and their residents are crucial not only for the atmosphere at the NH but also for achieving care goals. In order to test the potential effects of daily physical activities (sit-to-stand (STS) exercises) combined with oral nutritional supplementation (ONS), a randomized intervention trial (the Older Person’s Exercise and Nutrition (OPEN) Study) was performed in NH residents.

Life after falls prevention exercise – experiences of older people taking part in a clinical trial: A phenomenological study

There is little evidence about the lived experience of older people who have completed a falls prevention exercise programme and their life beyond their intervention. Despite good intentions and perceived benefits, on-going participation in falls prevention exercises beyond a structured, supervised intervention was not a priority for these older people.

Development of a resilience scale for oldest-old age (RSO)

Globally, the population of oldest-old (those aged ≥80 years) is rapidly growing. This change is likely to have a deep impact on societies. Resilience is a key concept related to facilitating adaptation, and can be applied, to aging-related change and losses, as well as promoting health and well-being in this population.

Evaluation of an initiative to improve advance care planning for a home-based primary care service

Advance care planning (ACP) is a process that enables individuals to describe, in advance, the kind of health care they would want in the future. There is evidence that ACP reduces hospital-based interventions, especially at the end of life. ACP for frail older adults is especially important as this population is more likely to use hospital services but less likely to benefit from resource intensive care.

Executive dysfunctions mediate between altered sensory processing and daily activity performance in older adults

Sensory processing is essential for the interaction with the environment and for adequate daily function. Sensory processing may deteriorate with aging and restrict daily activity performance. Aging may also affect Executive functions (EFs) which are critical for daily activity performance.
