Standards and quality of care for older persons in long term care facilities: A scoping review

Caring for older persons has become a global necessity to ensure functional ability and healthy ageing. It is of paramount importance that standards of care are monitored, especially for older persons who live in long term care facilities (LTCF). We, therefore, scoped and summarised evidence relating to standards and the quality of care for older persons in LTCFs in gerontological literature globally

Socioeconomic vulnerability and frailty among community-dwelling older adults: Crosssectional findings from longitudinal aging study in India, 2017–18

The Indian population is rapidly aging with huge proportion of illiterate and socioeconomically disadvantaged people and there is a dearth of research on the relationships between factors of socioeconomic vulnerability and frailty in older people. The present study examined the cross-sectional associations between socioeconomic vulnerability and physical frailty in community-dwelling older individuals in India.

Family caregivers’ involvement in caring for frail older family members using welfare technology: A qualitative study of home care in transition

Demographic, economic and organisational changes challenge home care services. Increased use of welfare technology and involvement of family members as co-producers of care are political initiatives to meet these challenges. However, these initiatives also involve ethical aspects.

Are multimorbidity patterns associated with fear of falling in community-dwelling older adults?

Multimorbidity is defined as the co-occurrence of multiple chronic or acute diseases and medical conditions in the same individual and can be grouped into different patterns based on the type of disease. These patterns are associated with poorer quality of life and premature death. It is believed that these patterns entail functional limitations, which may contribute to the fear of falling; however, this association remains unknown.

Prevention Admission into Nursing homes (PAN): Study protocol for an explorative, prospective longitudinal pilot study

In Switzerland, there is a lack of adequate rehabilitation services, and effective coordination, that take into account the multifactorial health risks of older people. The literature shows that the hospitalisation rate in rehabilitation facilities has increased in recent years and that a gender bias exists. Additionally, there is little or no evidence available on the effect that a post-acute care programme might have over an extended period on functioning, quality of life and the informal network of older people.

Factors infuencing fear of falling in community-dwelling older adults in Singapore: A cross-sectional study

Fear of falling (FoF) has far-reaching implications including activity restriction, functional decline and reduced quality of life. It is a common consequence of falls but may be present even in non-fallers. This study aimed to determine the factors associated with FoF in a segment of Singapore’s community-dwelling older adults.

Association between daily activities and fall in older adults: An analysis of longitudinal ageing study in India (2017–18)

Declining functionality affects an individual’s musculoskeletal integrity increasing the risk of fall and disability. Individuals with severe functional limitations are 5 times more likely to experience a fall. Thus, this paper investigated the association between functional decline and falls in older adults.

Do changes in frailty, physical functioning, and cognitive functioning predict mortality in old age? Results from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam

The ability to accurately predict survival in older adults is crucial as it guides clinical decision making. The added value of using various health indicators as well as changes in these indicators for predicting mortality remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate whether changes in health indicators such as frailty and physical performance improve mortality predictions in old age.

Social participation and change in walking time among older adults: A 3-year longitudinal study from the JAGES

Among all physical activities, walking is one of the easiest and most economical activities for older adults’ mental and physical health. Although promoting social participation may extend the walking time of older adults, the longitudinal relationship is not well understood. Thus, this study elucidates the relationship between nine types of social participation and change in walking time during a 3-year follow-up of older adults.

Exploring experiences and needs of spousal carers of people with behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) including those with familial FTD (fFTD): A qualitative study

Carers of people with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) experience greater challenges than carers of people with other dementias due to the younger age of onset and the challenging presentation of symptoms. The aim of the present study was to explore experiences of spousal carers of people with bvFTD, including those with the familial form of the disease (fFTD).

Nursing home residents with suspected urinary tract infections: A diagnostic accuracy study

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common infections in nursing homes (NHs). A high error rate of a UTI diagnosis based solely on clinical criteria is to be expected in older persons as they often present infections in an atypical way. A study was set up to assess the diagnostic value of signs/symptoms and urine dipstick testing in identifying UTIs in NH residents and to explore whether C-reactive protein (CRP) measured by point-of-care testing (POCT) can help in the diagnosis.

Associations of Chinese diagnosis-related group systems with inpatient expenditures for older people with hip fracture

Hip fracture is frequent in older people and represents a major public health issue worldwide. The increasing incidence of hip fracture and the associated hospitalization costs place a significant economic burden on older patients and their families. On January 1, 2018, the Chinese diagnosis-related group (C-DRG) payment system, which aims to reduce financial barriers, was implemented in Sanming City, southern China.

Discontinuation of long-term care among persons afected by the 2018 Japan Floods: A longitudinal study using the Long-term Care Insurance Comprehensive Database

Most older people with disabilities or illnesses continue to use long-term care (LTC) services for the rest of their lives. However, disasters can cause a discontinuation of LTC services, which usually means tragic outcomes of affected persons. In view of the recent progression of population aging and the increase in natural disasters, this study focuses on the impact of disasters on older people’s discontinuation of LTC services, and those more risk of such discontinuation than others. However, current evidence is scarce.

Positive efects on activities of daily living one year after receiving comprehensive geriatric assessment – results from the randomised controlled study CGA-Swed

Today’s acute hospital care is poorly adapted to the complex needs of frail older people. This exposes them to avoidable risks, such as loss of functional capacities, leading to unnecessary health and social care needs. Being frail and in need of acute hospital care often leads to higher dependence in Activities of Daily Living (ADL), especially if one’s needs are not acknowledged.

Fall determinants in hospitalised older patients: A nested case control design - incidence, extrinsic and intrinsic risk in Malaysia

The older person is at greater risk of falls due to multiple intrinsic and extrinsic factors. This is com‑ pounded when the elderly is admitted to hospitals, as they are acutely ill and placed in an unfamiliar environment. Delirium and polypharmacy further complicate these problems. As falls reflect quality of care with potential for grave outcomes, this study aimed to identify the extent and risk of falls in public hospitals.
