Difering determinants of disability trends among men and women aged 50years and older

Researchers have emphasized the importance of examining how different factors affect men’s and women’s functional status over time. To date, the literature is unclear about whether sex affects the rate of change in disability in middle to older age. Researchers have further emphasized the importance of examining how different factors affect men’s and women’s functional status over time.

Higher prevalence of geriatric depression, catastrophizing pain and sleep disorders in institutionalized elders: A cross-sectional study in Galle District, Sri Lanka

Population aging is a significant social problem in the twenty first century. Recent economic and social changes lead increasing number of elders to spend their lives in elderly homes. Institutionalized elders have to face many physical and psychological problems which negatively impact their quality of life. Geriatric depression (GD), catastrophizing pain (CP) and sleep disorders (SD) are some common problems among them.

Thyroid function and age-related decline in kidney function in older Chinese adults: A cross-sectional study

Thyroid function may be a factor affecting kidney function in the general population. Kidney and thyroid function vary with age; therefore, the association between thyroid function and decreased kidney function in older adults may be different from that in younger adults and remains controversial. This study aimed to estimate the association between normal-range thyroid function and age-related decline in kidney function in older Chinese adults.

Specifc lysophosphatidylcholine and acylcarnitine related to sarcopenia and its components in older men

Metabolic profiling may provide insights into the pathogenesis and identification of sarcopenia; however, data on the metabolic basis of sarcopenia and muscle-related parameters among older adults remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to identify the associations of metabolites with sarcopenia and its components, and to explore metabolic perturbations in older men, who have a higher prevalence of sarcopenia than women.

Strong evidence for age as the single most dominant predictor of medically supervised driving test—mini mental status test outcomes provide only weak but significant moderate additional predictive value

With age, medical conditions impairing safe driving accumulate. Consequently, the risk of accidents increases. To mitigate this risk, Swiss law requires biannual assessments of the fitness to drive of elderly drivers. Drivers may prove their cognitive and physical capacity for safe driving in a medically supervised driving test (MSDT) when borderline cases, as indicated by low performance in a set of four cognitive tests, including e.g. the mini mental status test (MMST).

The association between community-level socioeconomic status and cognitive function among Chinese middle-aged and older adults: A study based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS)

Although numerous studies focused on the relationship between area socioeconomic status (SES) and health, only a few of them investigated how community-level SES was linked to late-life cognitive function as well as the potential pathways underlying this association, and very few of them focused on the context of China. This study examined how community-level SES was linked to cognitive function and the potential pathways underlying this association among middle-aged and older adults in China.

Adaptation and validation of the Spanish version of the everyday cognition battery for assessing everyday cognition in older adults

Ageing entails a series of neuroanatomical and neurophysiological changes in some cognitive processes that directly affect the daily life and autonomy of a person. We believe it is necessary to have tools that assess the cognitive functions that are essential for carrying out daily activities in an independent manner. The aim of this study was to translate the Everyday Cognition Battery (ECB) into Spanish, adapt it to the sociocultural context of Spain, and validate it by testing the psychometric properties, i.e., the reliability and validity of the translated version.

Association between statin use and physical performance in home-dwelling older patients receiving polypharmacy: Cross-sectional study

In older patients with polypharmacy and multiple comorbidities, even low grades of statin-associated muscle symptoms may have clinical implications. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the potential associations between statin use and measures of physical performance and muscle function.

Individual and environmental factors associated with cognitive function in older people: A longitudinal multilevel analysis

Individual and environmental factors have been found to be related to cognitive function. However, few studies have examined the longitudinal effects of both individual and environmental factors over time. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of individual and environmental factors over time on older people’s cognitive function.

Creating opportunities to improve detection of older adult abuse: A national interRAI study

Despite being recognized as a major global health issue, older adult abuse (OAA) remains largely undetected and under-reported. Most OAA assessment tools fail to capture true prevalence. Follow up of patients where abuse exposure is not easily determined is a necessity. The interRAI-HC (International Resident Assessment Instrument—Home Care) currently underestimates the extent of abuse.

Serum creatinine/cystatin C ratio as a screening tool for sarcopenia and prognostic indicator for patients with esophageal cancer

Sarcopenia is associated with poor clinical outcomes of patients who underwent esophagectomy. The current diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia are complex and laborious. We aimed to employ the simple and economic indicator sarcopenia index (SI = creatinine/cystatin C ×100) to screen for sarcopenia and to evaluate its prognostic value in patients with esophageal cancer (EC).

Later-life transitions and changes in prescription medication use for pain and depression

Over the past two decades, prescription medication use for pain and depression increased dramatically. Most studies consider the early life course, despite a similar increase among those in later life. In this paper, we examine whether and how later life transitions may relate to changes in medication use.

Association between early elevated phosphate and mortality among critically ill elderly patients: A retrospective cohort study

Phosphate disturbances are relatively common in hospitalized patients, especially in critically ill patients. The abnormal phosphate levels may indicate an abnormal body condition. However, little is known about the association between elevated serum phosphate and outcome in critically ill elderly patients. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between early elevated phosphate and mortality in critically ill elderly patients.

Experiences of family caregivers 3-months after stroke: Results of the prospective transregional network for stroke intervention with telemedicine registry (TRANSIT-Stroke)

Long-term support of stroke patients living at home is often delivered by family caregivers (FC). We identified characteristics of stroke patients being associated with receiving care by a FC 3-months (3M) after stroke, assessed positive and negative experiences and individual burden of FC caring for stroke patients and determined factors associated with caregiving experiences and burden of FC 3M after stroke.

Cognitive decline, sensory impairment, and the use of audio-visual aids by long-term care facility residents

Hearing and vision impairments and the use of audio-visual aids are associated with cognitive decline in community-dwelling older people, but effects in long-term care facilities (LFCF) are unclear. We hypothesize that visual and hearing impairment are associated with cognitive decline and these relationships are mediated by using visual and hearing aids.
