Leveraging on sustainable energy transition to change the energy narrative of the dark continent

This study overviews sustainable development goals (SDGs) and sustainable energy transition (SET) and then examines − sub-Sahara Africa’s (SSA) participation in SET; challenges of power inadequacy, exploitation, and deployment of zero-carbon based energy; and steps to fast track renewable energy (RE) development and utilisation. The study identifies factors responsible for power inadequacy in the region to include poor power equipment manufacturing infrastructure, pillaging of power projects funds, use of obsolete power facilities, lack of maintenance of power facilities and stations, and abandonment of power facilities due to breakdown. The world’s quest to shift from the consumption of fossil fuels to RE has worsened the possibility of SSA overcoming these challenges.

State policy of Kazakhstan on implementing of renewable energy sources in textile industry companies

The article discusses the mechanisms of state support for the development of renewable energy sources (RES) in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The authors consider the prospects of using solar energy in the textile industry. The analysis revealed that the level of organization of work in companies in the field of energy conservation and energy efficiency of production depends on the following factors: timely observation of the current power supply and possible future energy potential; development and implementation of energy-effective measures; use of RES with purpose of saving energy resources. According to the authors, the dominance of electric and thermal forms of energy in the cost structure leads to a loss of competitiveness of the company’s products in the textile industry. The article considers the transition to combined generation of electric and thermal energy in textile industry companies using renewable energy sources. The calculation of the energy saving coefficients of electric and thermal energy produced by the authors proved the possibility of reducing the cost of textile products by introducing renewable energy sources.

Examining the relationship between electricity consumption, financial development and economic growth in Asean countries: Evidence from a Bayesian analysis

The literature has suggested that financial development and electricity consumption are key determinants of economic growth. However, existing studies usually was applied the frequentist inference, which is an outdated estimator. By applying the Bayesian approach via the Metropolis-Hasting and Gibbs samplers as the MCMC methods, the study aims to re-examine the impact of financial development and electricity consumption on economic growth in ASEAN+6 countries from 1980 to 2016. The obtained outcome shows that the impact of both financial development and electricity consumption is strong and positive on economic growth. There is a uni-directional causality running from economic growth to energy consumption, supported the Conversation hypothesis. Based on the empirical result, several policy implications are suggested for emerging countries, ASEAN+6 nations, in particular...

Risk analysis of firm energy coverage in Colombia in the medium term

The recent auction of firm energy and the decisions on medium-term coverage give rise to risks in the supply of electricity in Colombia in the coming periods. Taking into account the possible risks that may arise, such as: non-compliance with FEO due to generation units (six [6] non-compliances during 2015-2016 term), the delay of generation projects with committed firm energy (Hidroituango case) and the availability of firm energy in the market, imply a systemic risk for the electric power supply in the medium term. Through the study of technical documents and resolutions, issued by the CREG, about the medium term energy balances in 2018, firm energy supply and demand balances were reconstructed, including the results of the last FEO auction carried out in the first quarter of 2019, in order to carry out a risk analysis based on these same scenarios. It was observed that the amount of FEO auctioned exceeds the quantity of demand projected, meaning that the CREG assumed a conservative position by purchasing more energy than necessary (8650 GWh-year and 1027 GWh-year respectively), this is a situation that has occurred on more than one occasion.

Techno-economic assessment of wind turbines in Nigeria

Wind energy potentials of some selected high altitude and coastal areas in Nigeria are assessed for possible utilization for the generation of electricity. The main aim is to provide pragmatic insight that will enhance the investment in wind energy conversion systems in an optimal manner. The data used in this present study were obtained from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency, which includes average wind speeds per day of four locations across the country, measured at the anemometer height of 10 m over a period of 11 years. With the sites classified based on their wind power densities, the capacity factor estimation value was used to select the most suitable turbine for the selected sites, and the present value cost method was employed to estimate the unit cost of energy of the turbine at various hub-heights. The results obtained from this study reveal that Jos, Kano and Ikeja are economically viable as well as having excellent wind resources integration into the grid, while P/H is viable for a standalone application. The outcome of the study provides useful information that will aid renewable energy policymakers in Nigeria for wind energy development.
