Evaluation of antibacterial effects of bile salt on pathogenic bacteria - An in vitro study

Antibiotics are the first line of defence against bacterial infections. Overuse/misuse of antibiotics has led to the emergence of antibiotics resistant bacterial strains, making them ineffective. Alternative approaches should be sought to handle this challenge. Bile salt is a cation compounded form of bile acid and is synthesized in the liver. Reduction in the flow of bile salts has led to bacterial translocation in the body. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro effect of bile salt on E. coli and S. aureus.

Mosquitoes alone transmit diseases to more than 700 million people annually. Culex quinquefasiatus mosquitoes are transmitters of diseases like malaria, filaria dengue fever, chinkunguniya and Japanese encephalitis which are among the most serious vector borne diseases. Malaria is a major global health problem. Malaria alone kills 3 million each year, including 1 child every 30 seconds. Botanical pesticides are preferred in comparison to synthetic pesticides, as they are eco-friendly and bio degradable. Effect of mass flow rate, moisture content and machine parameters on quality of extrudates prepared from different blends of Sattu and Kodo

Extrudates were prepared to identify the optimum machine parameters and prepare good quality ready to eat extruded snacks from a suitable blend of sattu and kodo. Kodo is millet that supply starch necessary to provide required puffing quality to extrudate. Kodo also imparts brightness to the extrudate. Sattu has been blended as it is a rich source of protein gram being the main source followed by wheat and barley. It also provides fibres. The experiments were carried out to find out the effect of different levels of processing parameters. The experiment was planned and conducted to characterize the machine parameters namely screw speed, barrel temperature, and die head temperature and feed parameters namely moisture content and ratio of different blends of two materials namely sattu and kodo identified for preparation of ready to each extruded snack. On analysing the data obtained it was found that the mass flow rate increases with increase in moisture content and the rate of increase is slow at lower values of moisture content which goes on increasing with increase in moisture content also the mass flow rate decreases with decrease in the proportion of kodo in feed.

Health promotion and the agenda for sustainable development, WHO Region of the Americas

The approaches and tools of health promotion can be useful for civil society groups, local and national governments and multilateral organizations that are working to operationalize the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. Health promotion and sustainable development share several core priorities, such as equity, intersectoral approaches and sustainability, that help maximize their impact across traditional sectoral boundaries. In the Region of the Americas, each of these priorities has strong resonance because of prominent and long-standing health inequities that are proving resistant to interventions driven solely by the health sector. We describe several cases from the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Region of the Americas in which the approaches and tools of health promotion, with a focus on cities, healthy settings and multisectoral collaboration, have been used to put the agenda into practice. We highlight areas where such approaches and tools can be applied effectively and provide evidence of the transformative potential of health promotion in efforts to achieve the sustainable development goals.
