Application Note 1217 Soneplex® Broadband and Soneplex® Loop Extender Systems Telecommunications ®DS1 Hicap Route Diversity Option Overview With the recent introduction of the CPM (Continuous Performance Monitoring) module to the remote QLX product line and Soneplex MPU software release 4.2, DS1 hicap route diversity can now be added to the "path protection" feature associated with many fiber rings and OCn multiplexers. DS1 hicap route diversity allows service providers to extend path protection into the local loop and provide complete DS1 circuit protection for critical hicap customers. The DS1s are then multiplexed into DS2s for transmission over diverse fiber routes to a QLX remote cabinet on customer premises. The QLXs on customer premises monitor each copy of the DS1s within the DS2 and will select the best quality signal for delivery to the customer. Fiber route diversity is accomplished through the local loop portion of the network to the customer demarc. The Soneplex Broadband chassis with ODS2 modules can also be used when a DS3 is received from the Sonet ring and DS1 hicap route diversity is required to the customer premises. Switching is invoked only when one DS1 signal copy is of better quality than the other. Failure conditions originating beyond the hicap route diversity path do not cause a switch. Equipment Requirements Line Protection Release 4.2 of the Soneplex MPU (catalog #SPX-MPU0AXX) and the QLX CPM module are required for DS1 hicap route diversity. Line protection continues to be provided as an alternative when using ADC`s QFLC, QLX, and ODS2 modules in any configuration.
