UNIVERSITY 2 OKAYAMA UNIVERSITY Overview of Okayama University Okayama University is one of the largest universities in Japan. Its main campus, Tsushima, is located in the suburbs, blessed with a quiet natural environment far removed from the noise of the city, offering an excellent atmosphere for study and research. Okayama Prefecture is known for its educational history and its cultural achievements. Special efforts beginning before the Meiji Period (19th century) were made to establish a number of schools which lead to the present-day Okayama University. Today Okayama University has 11 faculties, seven graduate schools (seven Doctor’s courses, seven Master`s courses, and two Professional Degree courses), one university-affiliated institute, three university libraries (one main and two branch libraries), one nationwide joint-use facility, and 14 university-wide centers, in addition to various research and educational institutions associated with each Faculty. Okayama University has excellent prospects and enjoys the reputation of being the leading university in the Chugoku-Shikoku region. OKAYAMA UNIVERSITY 3 About Distinguishing Characteristics of Okayama University ˙A combination of general and specialized education The education provided by Okayama University is divided into general and specialized education. General education is comprised of classes taken by students in all departments. It is not focused on any particular field; instead its purpose is to help create well-rounded individuals through training in a broad selection of areas. Specialized education, on the other hand, is designed to give students the skills they need to work in highly specifi c fields. This blend of general and specialized education is available in four and six-year courses in each faculty. ˙English language training based on the TOEIC test We offer a new program of finely-tailored English language training designed to provide a high level of English competence. All new students are given the TOEIC-IP test. Their score determines which class they will be assigned to, enabling them to receive the training appropriate to their level. Students set their own goals and plans for their English learning, depending upon the target for their faculty. ˙An educational support system tailored to specific student needs We have a highly developed system to assist students in making a smooth transition from high school to university. Faculty members, for example, provide office hours where students can freely drop in to ask questions or otherwise consult with them. We also offer classes on how to study at university, as well as an academic advisor system where faculty members provide students with advice. We work together with our students to provide in interesting, practical education through the Student Assessment Questionnaire (filled out by all students for all classes), and joint student-teacher committees for educational improvement. us Study Facilities ˙University Libraries Designed to be a library open to the local community, we have more than 2,000,000 books, 40,000 different magazines and a variety of electronic, visual and audio materials. We provide various services keeping pace with informatization, internationalization, and lifelong learning. ˙Center for Information Technology and Management We offer a high-speed communication network (ODnet) on campus, where we provide training in computer literacy and programming using over 900 educational-use computers. There are a number of apartment buildings in the Tsushima area in a radius of two kilometers, about 5-10 minutes by bicycle. Students in the Medical and Dental Schools live in the Shikata Campus area. Many students commute by bicycle. The JASSO scholarship is the major scholarship and consists of an interest-free loan and interest due loan.
