ATTACHMENT 3 Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development CARD Project 017/06VIE - Sustainable community-based forest development and management in some high-poverty areas in Bac Kan Province Report on a Training Course in Village Nursery Operations September/October 2007 As part of CARD Project 017/06VIE – Sustainable community-based forest development and management in some high-poverty areas in Bac Kan Province, a training course in village nursery operations was conducted in four project pilot villages at Na Muc, Khuoi Lieng (Van Minh Commune) and To Dooc and Ban Sang (Lang San Commune) in Na Ri district over the period 26 September – 19 October 2007. The main objective was to train villagers and commune extension workers in basic operations of village nursery. Trainers were Mr Khongsak Pinyopusarerk (CSIRO/Ensis) at Na Muc and To Dooc, Mr Ho Ngoc Son (Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry) at Na Muc and To Dooc, and Mr Nguyen My Hai (Bac Kan Agricultural Extension Department) at all four villages. At each village the course was run for 2 days and attended by 20 or more village members both male and female. The two commune extension workers in Van Minh and Lang San also participated The training began with informal lectures at the village meeting hall, using flip charts prepared from PowerPoint slides in Vietnamese language and many drawings and pictures. This was followed by a practical session focusing on preparation of potting mix and seed sowing. After that trainees and trainers joined force in construction of a nursery. The list of participants is given in Attachments 1 – 4. The training PowerPoint flip charts are presented in Attachment 5. A written manual “Tree Nursery Manual for Village Operations” was provided to project staff and extension workers (Attachment 6). This manual emphasises practical application suitable for small village nurseries. The informal lectures covered the following. 1. Planning a new nursery Factors to consider include (1) location, (2) availability and quality of water, (3) availability of growing media components, and (4) availability of seed material. Each of the factors was discussed in detail (see Attachment 5). A secured, long-term tenure of the nursery site and available water supply are perhaps the two most important. As a result, all the four site chosen or offered for nursery are easily accessed with a stream or a creek located nearby. Growing media components such as soil, river sand, rice husk, animal manure or compost can be obtained within each village. As for seed material, seed from local sources will be the priority, except acacia species which will be supplied by CSIRO/Ensis. Genetic quality of seed was emphasised at the training. For example, never collect seed from isolated trees as seed is most likely to be inbred. Also avoid collect seed from poorly grown or unhealthy trees. 2. Nursery hygiene Almost every nursery at some time will have plants die from disease. Participants were advised to keep nursery area clean, provide good drainage and avoid excessive watering. 2 3. Growing media Two kinds of mixes were recommended; one for seed germination, and the other for transplanting into pots. Several suitable mixes were suggested, mostly using components readily available from within the village. 4. Growing containers Nearly all nurseries in Vietnam use plastic bags as the main growing container. This CARD project will do likewise as they are very easy to purchase from markets in a nearby province of Thai Nguyen. The size of plastic bags should match the anticipated size of the seedlings, which may vary with species. 5. Raising plants from seed Different pre-treatment methods of seed were discussed in very detail. In particular, villagers were informed not too be afraid to treat acacia seed with hot boiling water. There are several ways to sow plant seed. Direct sowing into plastic bags filled with growing media is most convenient. But for species with small fine seed like eucalypts and melaleucas it is necessary to sow the seed in germination trays and prick out later. Pepper shaker in commonly used as the seed can be more evenly spread out. 6. Caring for nursery seedlings Under this part, we discussed (1) shade requirement, (2) watering, (3) fertilising, (4) weeding, (5) control of pests and diseases, (6) grading, (7) topping, and (8) hardening off. It was very clear that (6) to (8) are not normally practiced, even in most large nurseries in Vietnam. 7. Nursery records Two simple records were recommended; (1) record of seedling production, and (2) record of dispatch. General Discussion It was very pleasing to witness active participation from villagers both in the informal lectures and then in the nursery construction. Provincial, district and commune extension workers who participated and/or assisted in this training have established a friendly working environment with the villagers. Strong cooperation among these stakeholders in the nursery establishment and subsequent field planting of agroforestry model and plantations can be expected. After village community meetings during baseline surveys and land use planning process, villagers have become more interested in investing their own land and resources in tree plantation. CARD project field staff have received numerous requests for seedling support. Our project will raise extra seedlings to meet the demand. 3 To Dooc villagers at the training Discussion of nursery subject at Na Muc village Trainers and trainees working together to construct a nursery at To Dooc A presentation from Nguyen My Hai, Bac Kan provincial extension specialist Mr Nguyen My Hai showing training participants how to prepare good potting mix To Dooc nursery near complete 4 Attachment 1 Participants at CARD Project 017/06VIE - Village Nursery Training Location: Na Muc, Van Minh Date: 26-28 September 2007 No. Name 1 Khongsak Pinyopusarerk 2 Ho Ngoc Son 3 Nguyen Minh Hai 4 Hoang Anh Tuan 5 Luc Van Hoai 6 Luc Van Cao 7 Luc Van Long 8 Luc Van Luyen 9 Ma Thi Thiem 10 Luc Van Manh 11 Nong Thi Soi 12 Ma Thi Cuc 13 Luc Van Duy 14 Luc Van Luc 15 Luc Van Dung 16 Luc Van Phong 17 Luc Van Han 18 Luc Van La 19 Luc Van Ninh 20 Hua Thi Su 21 Ha Thi Tien 22 Ly Thi Ban 23 Dang Thi Ngan 24 Nguyen Thi Do Sex (M/F) M M M M M M M M F M F F M M M M M M M F F F F F Position Trainer Trainer Trainer Trainer Villager ... - tailieumienphi.vn
